There is a wonderful paint brush made by Royal and Langnickel, called the Aqualon Wisp. It has separate little "fingers" that are wonderful for painting nests like this.

Start with your darkest color, and stroke the brush in a circle shape. While that is still wet, pick up a lighter highlight color, and add more strokes/ lines. Repeat with varying colors to get a great wispy looking birds nest!

Forget actual texture and just paint the nest using shadows, scumbles, drybrush...and color well....examine a few actual nests under strong light and study carefully what you see...it won't be all brown!

well...you could use a comb, or put sand or something in your paint to make it literally textured...

but if it were me...I would use a sharp contrast between lights and darks...starting with the lights and finishing with the shadows. the highlights I would keep loose and brushy...

Seriously I would take some straw, grass or twigs, glue them onto the canvas and either leave them or paint them.
