I'm at work right now and there's a guy painting my new office. I begin talking to him, asking him a question about the lighting and the guy scratches his head. He didn't understand a word I said. He looks like he's from a european country. I suspect this guy is over here illegally.
Are people just as dilligent about cracking down on illegals who aren't Mexican?
Another thing, when someone wants to become a citizen, do they have to know English in order to take the test or is it written in other languages? Just curious because I don't see how this guy could be legal if he doesn't understand English. Maybe i'm wrong.

SNI52 - Really smart to take up for a potential illegal because of prejudice. You're a part of the problem here.

Thanks for the info..I didn't know the procedures. That's why i'm asking. I just don't know how people can function day to day not knowing the language. And sorry if it seems like i'm assuming this guy was an illegal. That was before I knew that you didn't have to know English to become a citizen.

They come into this country the same way illegal Mexicans do.
Through the gulf area on ships. The coast line is open from Texas to Georgia. It would be impossible to police the Florida Keys. Those illegal immigrants scare me a lot more than the Mexicans. No they do not have to learn English. But people from foreign countries I was told bring in diseases like polio, small pox to malaria. When they come in legally they have to take a series of shots. They are checked out health wise.
There is more to it than just learning English. It is more a security and safety issue than an immigrant issue.
A person who is not ill and has went through the proper channels and has no drug convictions, or running from the law in Mexico.
Has applied and taken immunization shots, can get the papers in Spanish and if he cannot read someone will read it to him.
Our friend said, He had no trouble getting his citizenship papers. They did a back ground check and gave him shots and read him the papers and he agreed to it. Which said to be loyal to this country, basically! They asked if he wanted to be enrolled in free classes that teach English as a second language. He did and now speaks fairly good English. But if they have warrants out for their arrest and a known drug peddler and refuse immunization shots those are the ones who have a hard time and have to stay illegally, because they know they have a criminal past and can't be legal. That is the main reason people are against illegal immigration.

Just because somebody cannot speak English does not mean that they are an illegal immigrant.
It is true that you have to be able to speak English to become a citizen, but to be able to apply for citizenship you have to be:
1. Formally resident for at least three years if residence is as a result of marriage to an American citizen or
2. A member of the American armed forces or
3. in all other cases, formally resident for at least five years.
It is quite possible that he could have obtained a visa legally and travelled here without having any knowledge of the English language. There is no such test for Lawful Permanent Residency (the step before citizenship). There are, however, requirements regarding criminal records and providing documentation of inoculations. In my view, that is the correct order of priorities. You can learn English. You cannot undo the other two.

They're supposed to know enough English to pass a citizenship test in English. I think they are mostly cracking down on people at the borders. Not sure how illegal immigrants from other countries get in. There are apparently Chinese people stowing away in container ships. Other people come here on a legal tourist visa and then just never leave. That's probably what your guy did, if he's illegal.

Well is He illegal or not ? That is the question. I live in San Antonio and down here people who were born here don't speak English.Thats by choice here.People are TOO proud to be Mexicans. This is the US of A . Although we don't have an official language (we should) English is the language of the majority and the majority rules. As for the guy scratching his head , maybe he cant understand your broken English! And yes the test is given in English .

You don't have to know English in order to immigrate here. You need to know it in order to become a citizen but you can't do that until you've had a green card for 5 years. In the mean time he's able to live and work here. The guy you encountered could very well be here legally.

Illegal is illegal no matter what country they are from... the only ones I think are not sent back are Cubans if they reach our land... because they are coming from a communist country and could be killed when sent back.. if they are caught in the water they are sent back but if they are caught on our land.. they are given asylum
and they are suppose to know English to become citizens.. but being P.C. they are very lax on it.. now a days everything is about them and less about us. Goodness forbid we make them feel like they are coming here to become citizens of an English speaking country... don't get me wrong.. I think people should hold on to their heritage.. and they are free to speak any language they want.. but I think as a Country we need to speak one language publicly.. we all need to communicate with each other

Yes, Americans are angry about all illegals, no matter what country they come from. However, those of us who live in the southern States, are more angry about the illegal mexican population, because they are the ones we live amongst, and are the majority of illegals in the USA. But, they are all law-breaker's and criminals against us. What I am doing to help crack down on illegals is sending out a petition to be sent to my Congress officials and my governor. You can, too, in whatever state you live in. If you want it, email me, and I will send it to you, via email. You can print it. If you want to report this fellow thinking he is an illegal alien, here are the numbers for all states, to call and report them.

There are plenty of OTM or other than mexicans comming in from both the northern and southern borders. IMO the OTM's are a bigger problem than the mexicans because a large number of them are from terrorist nations. The laws are the same for all illegal immigrants so they should all be treated the same.

They have caught people from numerous countries in stings in various states. They get deported.
People are supposed to know English to be a citizen but apparently they're lax on that as well.
