A couple of reasons: one is men navigate differently than women. Women tend to use landmarks (turn right at the 7-11) while men tend to use compass points (it's north and east of here). For this reason, a man may seem lost but still have a pretty fair idea of where he is going, I just need to find a road going east-west and turn on to it, etc.

Another is that men are not well socialized to ask other men (or women for that matter) for help. It's the downside of men's strong self-reliance trait.

It is especially hard to ask for directions in front of your women, that feels like admitting failure.

It's a pride issue for some men, they think it's a sign of weakness to stop and ask for directions. I am thankful that my husband is not like this. He will stop and get clarification and directions. I don't see this as a weakness, but as a strength to his character. It sure beats driving around for hours in the wilderness. Thank you honey!
