Don't just be concerned. Call your local shelter or What ever service you have in your home town for the elderly. See what you can do to help them . Lets not forget when you help the least of these. One day you will be rewarded for your compassion.

Some of these answers show that some people know absolutely nothing about old people in the U.K. They recieve one payment of £.100. per household not per person to help with the winter fuel bills. One of you seems to think that is a lot of beer money, well old people wouldn`t know, they can`t afford to buy beer, they have to live on a pension of about £80.p.w. for a couple. As for the suggestion that they should have worked harder and put more money under the mattress; they did work hard the working day was 12 hours Six and a half days a week, it is only in recent years that work has been so `cushy`The wages earned were so low, they barely covered essentials, few people had money over to put under a mattress. As for giving up a seat for them on a bus when you are feeling tired and cold, you are young their bodies are not as strong as yours and they are cold because their blood is thinner than yours. I am appalled that so many of you care so little for your old people. One day ( and it will come sooner than you think) you will be old, then you will know how they feel. For your sakes I hope the young people of that time are a lot more caring than some of you are now, if not you can look forward to a very un-plesant old-age. To the remainder of you who do care about the old, I hope that you will have compassion shown to you then as you have shown now. I have had a lot of experience with old people, most do not complain, do not grab every penny they can from the government and they live their lives inspite of the dis-respect shown to them by some people. They are real people just like you and me.They once had love affaires, marriage, children. They climbed mountains, rode motor-bikes, danced all night long, studied for hours in an 8`x 8` university bedroom, went to crazy parties and some of them lived through two world wars and had their youth stolen from them. It may be well to remember this.

A good question. I am surprised & disappointed by the negative responses. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised - we live in such a materialistic, selfish society. It is the previous generations who enable us to have our comfortable lifestyles. We should all give some thought to the elderly, especially at this time of year. Perhaps offer to deliver some fuel or to help with shopping, etc. Many old people are very lonely & they might welcome some company. By helping the elderly we might also get satisfaction for ourselves. Let's not forget that some day we will be old too. What goes around comes around.

Hello Pk,

YES, this winter in UK, the fuel prices have gone up and extortionate amount. The cold weather payments used to cover 30 percent of the bill, and now they just cover 5 percent . This really is a worry because older people don't always realise they are getting cold because of their changes in physiology. YOUR RIGHT TO BE WORRIED. Perhaps we should do our bit by making sure anyone who's elderly round our vicinity is warm and share a bit of our own warmth. If we are worried about particular people we could always contact AGE CONCERN on line. I will look up the web addy and put it on here.

Yes. If you are concerned, check regularly on the elderly people that you know and make sure they don't need anything. If you don't know anyone, but still want a way to act on your concern, Meal on Wheels, Meals for the Elderly and similar organizations are always looking for volunteers. They check on people daily as they deliver meals to them. Another good way to act on your concern is through your church if it has an outreach program. If not, start one.

Yes everyone who have feelings for the old folk who saved this country from the German jackboot (all) I say except this labour Government who have always treated us with contempt. They give us fuel allowance eroded by the cost rise/ utilities/ Rates/ and food generally and this year took away the rates refund they gave us last year. a lot of old folk will go cold and hungry this year Mr Blair but you wont know too much about it as Chequers is nice and warm and food and drink will be in abundance so have a nice Christmas and don't let it disturb your sleep

When I worked in the emergency room, hip fractures were very common with the elderly in the winter, because they fall and the hip breaks, because that part of the bone gets weak with age.
Old people should never walk on ice without assistance. Hold their arm close to you, and keep step.

Wait till our energy costs start causing poor people, young and old, to freeze and the resulting fires caused by these people using poorly maintained stoves and heaters. So, are we as a county concerned enough to help them? The oil company executives don't seem too upset with their record profits.

I'm glad you mentioned this...many times the elderly face many perils in the winter months, they are particularly susceptible to falls and sprains, could you shovel their snow for them? Would you be willing to run some errands for them so they don't have to go out in the weather? Loving somebody, more than your own self is the greatest gift we could give this season!
