The carpet is an indoor/outdoor with very tight nap. It is very hard to vacuum and ugly from years of wear and tear. I do not have the money to replace it, but I have to cover it. My rooms are huge and I want to cover up as much of the ugliness as I can. I don't think an average area rug will be big enough. I have even considered having carpet(even new indoor/outdoor) cut to size and laying it in the room..... any other ideas or tricks I could try??

I am getting a deal on the place through my boss who is my landlord, that is why the carpet was not replaced. Cleaning would not do much, as there is paint on the floor from the last tenant.

I agree, first, talk with your landlord, see if he would be willing to replace your carpet, or maybe you can agree to pay for half if he would be willing to pay for half...you didn't say if you lived in a complex or one that lets you remodel your apartments but I also live in an apartment and we aren't allowed to do remodeling in ours. =( If that route doesn't go over, then I suggest getting a big area rug to cover up the other rug. This rug you can roll up and take it in to get cleaned every few months at a specialized cleaners, or Kiwi can come in and clean it for you (they clean my carpets for me on warranty now and I love the service they provide). You can get pretty decent priced ones at Kohls or Pennys, Dillards, etc. Usually the bigger ones run about $100-$200. This beats having to replace the whole carpet. Good luck!

I had the same problem a few yars ago i my apartment. First of all, you have to take the focus away from the rug by making the room seem cozier. You can do this by adding colours which do not cantrast too much with the carpet but that will be pretty expensive. So you can try the same thing with your knick knacks around the house. Another way isto buy a cheap but nice SMALLER rug which has to occupy the central space of the room. It should be a shade lighter that your original rug. If the floor underneath is wooden then you can just remove the carpet and touch up the wood again. That'll look great!

Since it is a rental, I would think it's time for the landlord to replace it. It shouldn't be necessary, but if it will help convince the landlord, offer the monetary amount you would have spent or be willing spend toward replacement.

Where do you live? Do you mean you bought a Condo? Look into a flooring liquidation place. One of my mother-in-law's friends went to one here in Wash state and carpeted her living room for only $30
