If you do not have a liquor license is it required to pay the $900 to go to Bartending School or can Bars train you themselves?

I went to a bartending school before I started, and I think it's a good way to learn a wide variety of drinks. If you haven't bartended before, it's a good way to get used to mixing drinks quickly in a non-hostile environment.

You also get alcohol management certification, which is a requirement for bartenders (at least where I live).

I also think it's a good differentiator when you're looking to be hired. I think you're more likely to be hired if you have gone to bartending school than if you just walk in off the street with no experience.

If you need/want to train yourself, I think the bare minimum would include learning to make Long Island Ice Teas, Mojitos, Cosmopolitans, Apple Martinis, and traditional Martinis/Manhattans as well as your highball drinks (i.e. Rum & Coke).

I went to bartending school 6 years ago when I was 21. It cost me about $250 and lasted 2 weeks. They have different schedules of classes you can choose what is best for you.

I thought the school was a lot of fun. They had realistic bars set up around the room with all the liquer bottles filled with water/dye.
In school I learned all the different drinks, including which glass to use and correct garnish. Something you will learn in the school that you don't learn in a bar is most of the legalities of alcohol and bartending. Also, something you learn in school is what each different liquer is made of... example: Gin is made of juniper berries... As well as learning all the popular scotches, vodkas, that you would use in a real bartending job.

I am still bartending now, 6 years later and I do not regret going to bartending school. It was a fun experience for me.
Not to mention, being a certified bartender can really help you get a good job at a money making bar. But experience is always the key...

Hope this helped a little...

Small taverns might help, but to make good money from tips it is better to work at a regular club where there are a lot of people, and most of those places don't hire people without experience of some kind. The bartenders in taverns don't make much money in wages or tips.

I have heard of many people going to bar tending school. From what I understand it isn't much money and its only about 2 weeks. However, you can buy your own book to learn the drinks out of. Most of the bar tenders that I know got their start by working in a restaurant working their way up.
