I'd like to send 3 or 4 dozen bottles from Australia to relatives for their own personal consumption. I am concerned that the US rules on alcohol prohibit sending in alcohol. Thanks for any help!

Quick answers:

US Postal Service will not ship a package containing wine at all.

UPS only accepts packages containing wine from shippers who have signed and entered into a contract with UPS.

FedEx will ship wine from Licensees (manufacturers, wholesalers or retailers) who have enrolled in their wine shipment program.

33 States allow consumers of legal age to receive shipments of wine from wineries. Such shipments are still prohibited in the following 17 states as of August 2006, and a felony in states with an asterisk: AL, AR, DE, GA*, IN, KS, KY*, ME, MD*, MS, MT, NJ, OK, PA, SD, TN*, UT*, VT.

Basically, if you work for a winery, you may be able to ship to your mates and family in the US. If you are wanting to send them bottles from your own stash, you're more or less out of luck.

Best bet is to contact the winery(ies), find out if they export to America. Ask them who their agent is in the US, get the contact info. Reach out for the US agent/importer and work with them to get wine to your family. Most likely, they'll steer you towards a retailer near your family that can get the wine for them. You can contact the retailer and have them charge your credit card for the wine - honestly, it'll probably be a LOT less expensive than shipping the wine, anyway.

Good Luck, Mate!

Hello Eagle Woman! You will find that any chablis or chardonnay or "classic dry white" from the Western Australia Margaret River region is a spectacular wine. Those guys in Western Australia are so self conscious about being so far away from the rest of the population of Australia that they do not distribute any mediocre wine east of the state's borders. They would therefore be very unlikely to send any crap wine to the USA. The first bottle you see with "WA Margaret River" plastered on it... grab it and I can pretty much guarantee that it will be a good one... having followed this fail safe method for around 10 years now I've never opened a crook one. Love Gazza.... woops... I mean.. Mango Man.

if you are sending it as a gift then it shouldn't be a problem, some states may not like it but the US postal service is run by the federal government as is customs so just declare it as homemade wine and mark it as a gift on your customs form and you will not have any problems. As long as you do not do this repeatedly there won't be any worries. The states with sticks up their butts are NY and UT and WA and a few southern states that have stupid liquor laws, but again, they have nothing to do with customs or postal inspection. I live in NY and buy wine from CA NJ and NYC all of the time, no sales tax pays for shipping.

That is a REALLY difficult question, since every state's laws are different regarding shipping wine. There are lots of states that won't allow wine to cross its borders from another state, let alone another country. You might want to try the wine institute (www.wineinstitute.org) and see what they say. Good luck!

The rules are different in different states. Australian wine is cheap and readily available in the US. Unless their is a personal connection to the wine, I would not bother.
