I found out one was you can't smoke. I would like to know if there are any others before I try to join. I used to smoke and do still occasionally, I can quit altogether no problem, I just want to make sure there are no other surprises when I go to join.

I am amazed that some of your respondents have labeled my church a cult, based on, apparently, only the knowledge that it places some behavioral restrictions on its members. The Wesleyan Church, although it does have some behavioral rules, has been around for over a century. One of the reasons we got started was that we opposed slavery, and some of our churches were part of the underground railroad. One of them hosted one of the most important meetings on voting rights for women. We have mission works in over 40 countries.

There are other restrictions beside smoking. Wesleyans are supposed to reserve their sexual activity for marriage to someone of the opposite sex, and not consume alcoholic beverages except for medicinal purposes, to name two of them. I would not be so foolish as to propose that all Wesleyans abide by these restrictions, but we are supposed to. It is our belief that refraining from these things is Biblical, in that refraining from such is good for the physical body, eliminates unneeded expenses, and is a good example for those who may be following us.

We are not just about restrictions, however. We are supposed to love all persons, regardless of their behavior. Christ is supposed to be our example. We are supposed to attend church regularly, unless providentially hindered. We are supposed to support our church financially, and are encouraged to tithe.

No one is required to join The Wesleyan Church, but we are supposed to be up front with our expectations, so that those who join know what they are joining.

Why would you join any group that places boundaries on you? The only boundaries you should be trying to stay within are the ones set by Jesus himself. Other than that, I would say it sounds like a cult.

There is the required frontal lobotomy that puts a lot of people off that particular cult.
