Well ... I only laugh when I think somethings funny. The word appropriate is fairly relative. I'd have to say YES I have laughed and tried to stifle it when OTHERS thought it inappropriate and was unable to. Something about a joke with an old friend at a funeral. I didn't see any issues but several in my circle of friends thought that they should admonish me regarding my decorum ... or apparent lack thereof.

Holy, moly---yes!

I remember when I was 13 years old, the father of my best friend died (he was in his early 30's). My sister and I knew the whole family very well, so we decided to go to his funeral. The church was packed (he had been a police officer, so there were also officers represented from all over the state.)

Anyway, my sister and I were sitting there and this was the first funeral we had ever attended. It was all very sad, and my friend was one of 7 siblings and she was the oldest, so this man had left a large, very young family. At some point a huge woman sat down in the pew directly in front of me and my sister. Draped across her shoulders was a fur piece that that was the whole pelt of the mink---its mouth was holding its tail, it was in poor taste, and looked ridiculous. For some reason my sister and I spotted it at the same time, glanced at one another, and broke out in giggles!

It was awful, and we were getting some really dirty looks. We both felt bad, but couldn't stop giggling for quite a while. In hindsight, I realize that the high emotions and the sadness of the occasion were hard on my sister and I, and that this was just our way of coping.

I think that all of us have had this happen at some point in our lives (giggling inappropriately is often preferred to a full melt-down of grief and crying, which is what happened in our case.)

It can be interesting to challenge whether something is inappropriate or not. Laughing at a funeral...? As far as covering it, I tend to think that you can if you must. For example if someone said I will shoot you if you laugh.

I laugh when I'm nervous or stressed, and unfortunately that sometimes happens at unappropriate times (for example, memorial services, or when I'm telling someone something awful that happened to me). Most of the people I know are accustomed to it by now, but whenever I meet new people I always have to explain to them. Basically, everyone has some sort of reaction to stress, and mine (as well as many other peoples') happens to be laughter. Other people cry, get angry... it depends.

One time Grassy started to laugh uncontrollably in the middle of some serious lovemaking. It broke my concentration. Its embarassing cause then you had to admit you were thinking of something else. Now if she was just wearing a wig of your hair color....
