All I can suggest is upgrading to the newest windows media player. I think that may work...
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx
Windows Media PLayer 9 is also known to not be that great, the same may be for 11, but it does atleast work.

Try updating Windows Media on the window site, it may help! If not you may want to re-install Windows 98, the program may have left out a file or may be defective. Hope this helps!

Definely the video codecs on your PC could very well be corrupted. Since WMP calls on all the video codecs, if one is damaged, the entire program will crash.
Yes un-installing/re-installing, probably will not solve the issue, because pieces of old video codecs can be in the registry and in files.
First, download a program called "Codec Sniper" it will tell you which ones are damaged.
Then write down the name of the codec, and search your registry and files for all traces of it. usually directshow filters have an .ax extension.
FFDshow can do this if not completely removed. send me a message if you need more help.

vlc is a reliable theory some clips you may't watch with WMP reason it has no longer been formatted that way,if you're effective your clip is nicely matched with WMP all you should do is sweet click on the clip (record) and selsect "Play with.."then pick Window media participant or vlc.

goto the media player, web site and have your pervious version up graded, some of the files and drivers may have been deleted, when you get the up grade get the media player 11 and update the license agreement, this will take care of the error problem
