It's not a crime, unless you lied to the store to get them to take it back. Then it's misdemeanor fraud.

I suggest you read the small print on the package. Typically free samples and coupons for free stuff have something like "redeemable or 1/30 cent". If it does...go redeem it for the 1/30th cent. No law against it. Also some sample are marked not for re-sale or non-returnable.
Honestly...I doubt the company that sent out this product failed to consider the financial loss they would incur bu allowing thousands of people to come in and in effect get free money.

Free packets are usually packaged differently from the regular stuff thats for sale, quite often it will even have "free sample" stamped on it. If you take it to a store they likely won't refund you anything as they can tell you got it for free.

If it's not illegal, go for it. Now if you are dealing with a moral issue, then that is really up to you then. One thing to keep in mind is that refunds involve proof of purchase and if the sample was free, you might have a hard time returning it for a cash refund.

That's called taking advantage of a deal the companies hope you won't.
If the company gives you a refund, it's not stealing. You're not doing anything without their knowledge or taking anything they're not giving you. You're just making good on a deal.
If you snuck the stuff outside in your coat and THEN went back for a refund, that's stealing. If they gave it to you, it's legit.

Where is it??? I want some too! I'd keep the stuff and give it for gifts for xmas, if it's something you COULD give. The items may have a bar code that tells they were free samples...then you'd feel foolish to try to take it back for a refund. Give gifts!

Wouldn't that be fraud? Afterall, you're seeking a cash refund on a product you never bought.
Also, I think the upc code against which the refund would be issued is worth 1/30th of a cent.
