On any assembly print, a bill of material outlines all the components that make up that assembly and their respective quantities. Some bills are arranged by sub-assemblies, some arrangements are by piece-parts without regard for sub-assemblies.

The bill should contain a vendor identification and that vendor's unique part number for the item (CAGE codes are frequently used to specify individual vendors), or they should contain a specification (material call out) and a nomenclature (dimensional or otherwise physical description) by which they are identified.

Every part in the bill should be unique and should be uniquely identified.
