Jesus proved two things through this scenario:

1. Demons are real.

2. Jesus has power over them.

Jesus created the demons as angels. He once knew them personally. Maybe he had a certain amount of compassion on them....just speculting, but anyhow, by casting him out and and letting them go into the pigs demonstrated his authority over them. And remember, pork is and was not kosher to Jews.

It was a demonstration of the power we as Christians could all have. The Scripture says that if we resist the Devil, he must flee, and that we would be empowered with the ability to cast demons out in Jesus' name. There's a story in the NT about the sons of a Jewish minister/rabbi named Sceva who came under Paul's teaching and influence, but had not yet embraced salvation. They had heard and seen Paul cast out demons and thought that all they had to do was mimic Paul. But they didn't understand the need for God-given AUTHORITY, and when they attempted to cast out demons from the demoniac that Jesus later cured, the devils spoke against the sons of Sceva by saying, "Jesus we know and Paul we know (recognizing his spiritual authority, not deifying him), BUT WHO ARE YOU"? They DID NOT recognize authority that wasn't present, so they were attacked, beaten, and stripped of their clothes by the demonically charged rage of ONE man. Why were they stripped naked you ask? I believe it was a symbolism intended to reveal to all present that these sons of Sceva had no authority! Putting on certain types of garments is well know in Scripture to represent authority, dominion, royalty and etc. and the sons of Sceva, while being learned men, were not spiritually authoritative in their learning and embracing of the truth.

Look at what they said and you will see why. Thy cried "...with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, ( Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God ? ) I ( adjure thee by God, ) that thou torment me not." Mark 5:7.James was right when he said even the devils believe and tremble, James 2:9. This band of demons #1.Jesus caused them to speak with a loud voice so others could hear the good news.#2. They teach us to recognize Him as the Son of the Most high God. #3.Then they teach us to ask in the name of God.Praise the Lord ! That old liar done messed up again, Thank You Jesus ! Mark 5:9, Jesus asked , "What is thy name ?" #4.Thus teaching us to call out our sins by their name. We can't come to God and expect Him to heal us with only half truths. A lie is not a fib, it's a lie, when we come to Jesus we need to come with everything that we are aware of.We can hide these things for awhile from those we are around, but usually it all comes out. We can hide nothing from God. So tell Him your problems, He is a good listener.

Because He is the Son of God. He knows people's sufferings and He cast out demons. That's the one name demons can't stand to hear.... Jesus Christ!

We can only speculate. I go with the compassionate idea. Jesus had personal knowledge of their works, past, present and future; he knew it was not yet the time for judgment, so he allowed their passing through an animal host.

Because evil spirits are real, and He was showing that these evil spirits can be sent away...exorcized. He sent them into Pigs, as they are animals not fit for human consumption...They are scavengers, not meant to be eaten.
