Augustine, a father of the church and who we owe a great deal of our understanding of how we worship today, said yes. He believed that understanding was a gift from God but that gift had to be refined with help from someone (or more) that already went through the study and work.
Plus, when you look at most of the major religions it focuses on community. When you work with others it is impossible not to have gurus or to be a guru to someone else.

My personal belief: God is close to everyone. It doesn't matter if you are a saint of the Catholic Church or a criminal on death row. It is possible that God can be close to you, and at the same time, you are not close to God. That is when it helps to seek a guru who understands the faith journey and can help you go through it.

Yes. But there are many false gurus today. The moment you feel you are being brain washed to think differently from common sense, you are being misled. The real guru is not the physical presence but the teachings. But we need gianis or intellects to inteprete the scriptures. Most intellects are however just intellects. The true teachers are not interested in the public. The people of this world are in darkness. GU means darkness. RU means Inner Light.
Once you have knowledge you will fulfill your inner thirst. But before you actually receive knowledge, there is preparation to be done. Most people just say, "give it to me". Just curiosity of the moment. And no preparations made.
Why do you need to prepare ?
Because, all our lives we have been unpreparing ourselves.

Centuries ago, yes; not at all now.
Because all men can directly gain access to the Creative Word of God on the Internet. A guru is only a man like other people.

The term Guru was described to me as consisting of the merger of two things:

"Gu" meaning the lowest thing (ie the solid stuff you flush)

"Ru" meaning light or spirit.

This is usually referred to as a guide or teacher so in a way yes. But the common meaning is that we don't question the Guru or use our intellect, so in this case, no.
