The one that you like the best. Taste is a very individual thing. I have tried numerous single malts and blends, and have attended quite a few tastings. I typically look for a good value when buying single malts. However there are a few that seem to stand out: a number of people from the UK that I have had tastings with really like Highland Park (I agree!) and a bunch of my coworkers describe Aberlour A'bunadh as the "gold standard". Auchentoshan 3-wood triple-distilled is an outstanding Lowland, Springbank a good Campbelltown. But these may not be your favorites. I don't know the Islays well enough to offer much in the way of advice there, because there is a wide range in the amount of peat/smoke flavor. Best advice I can give you: go to tastings, and get to know the staff at a good liquor store. They can give you excellent advice. Michael Jackson has written some excellent books on the subject. Cheers!

Glenlivet is a personal favorite and as far as single malts go a pretty good price. Depending on your tastes a 12 or 18 y/o Macallan might suit you

Although Chivas Regal and Johny Walker Black are international brands this is due to marketing. However, as far as single malts go: Laiphroag is considerd by cogniscenti and drunks alike as having the best smokey taste and it gives you the best high and it is smooth.
