herpes simplex virus. You can't get rid of them, but using products like abreva help. to prevent them, you have to avoid kissing or sharing drinks with someone who has it

A cold sore is caused by Herpes Simplex Virus type 1. It is best to just wait them out as they will eventually go away on thier own. Some people have recurrent ones and they are extremely painful as the virus infects a nerve. They can be treated with antiviral medication such as valtrex/acyclovir - from a doctor or Abreva over the counter which is a topical cream and can reduce the duration of the cold sore.
It is thought that stress can trigger the eruption of a cold sore as well as sunburn, inadequate diet, and chapped lips.

This is one theory; to much acid in your system, like to much pizza or spaghetti (to many tomatoes) also I have noticed an upset stomach will bring them about. I use Campho-Phenique but there is a new product that cost about 18.00 that is supposed to get rid of them in two days.
