if you are familiar enough with the dog to know whether or not it's had all of it's shot and is not carrying any diseases, then just treat the bite. but if not-then you should make an appt to see your dr within 24 hours to get a tetanus shot. dogs carry all sorts of nasty germs in their mouths (especially if they are stray)

to treat the bite:

-wash it well with warm water and mild soap (dove or ivory)
-apply a thin layer of neosporin and cover with a bandaid or wrap with gauze wrap

you can take ibuprofen for the pain and swelling. take 200-400mg every 6 hours as needed but no more than 1200 in 24 hours.

things to watch for that indicate infection are

-the area around the bite begins to swell more or becomes more red
-the bite begins to ooze liquid (pus)
-the bite becomes more painful or hot to the touch
-you begin to run a fever of 101.0 or higher

if you have any of these-report to your dr or the er asap for treatment

Do you know this dog ? Has it had all it's shots including Rabies? If you can't answer these questions than you need to see a doctor as soon as possible.
