wonder sometimes if there could be a God? I don't necessarily mean the God of the Bible, or any other book or religion. I just mean that is there a possibility that there is some kind of Creator/God, even if you believe in evolution?

Nope.

The thing is, by not looking past this life or worrying about the next, all my focus is here, and now. I invest time and effort into making this life as good as possible, being the best I can be here and now.

I don't do this out of fear of some future judgement...I mean, I'm judging myself now anyway. What's right is right, what's good is good, and I know how to choose good over bad and right over wrong. I don't feel any connection between conscience and an omnipresent being.

I don't think people have any different death than any other animal. We all eat, sleep, live, and die in a similar manner - why should things be any different after we expire?

What we know we have is the time we breathe...right here, right now. Embrace that time, make it all it can possibly be.

If you spend this life preparing for the next one, you may miss the entire reason there's a life at all.

If you're a truly good person in this life, there's nothing to worry about in the next one.

Nope. Not at all.

In an absolute sense, of course there is the possibility of there being a god. But that possibility is about as great as leprechauns existing on Pluto. It really isn't something I worry about at all.

Now, I do wonder about how the universe came to be. That is a question we just don't have an answer for yet. I also wonder about alien lifeforms existing around the universe. If it happened here, it can happen elsewhere. And I even wonder about the mechanism that makes something exist instead of not existing. All of those are difficult questions.

The idea of a god doing it is just too absurd and childish.

To me, your question is akin to asking me if I spend time wondering whether thunder might really be the result of Thor hammering out lightning bolts in a volcano somewhere, or not necessarily Thor or any other book or religion, but just some kind of Stormbringer/God, hammering out lightning bolts, even if you believe in static electricity.

Everyone has that idea at one time or another, and some atheists I think actually believe in God but reject him. I don't blame them, if God is all powerful and created this world and left his creations to live like this then he is borderline evil in my humble opinion. It's like making your children live in the yard while you sit in the comfort of your warm living room, and totally ignore the pleas of your children to come in and warm up.

In the long run if you look at this world God cannot be all powerful and All loving. He's one or the other,he's either all powerful but doesn't really care about the trials and suffering of mankind because it serves his purposes,or he loves man beyond measure but cannot stop what he's set in motion. I think it's that very idea that makes many claim atheism, though most will never admit it. It's not that they don't have some belief in God or a God,it's just that they hate him. And I for one don't blame them, I consider myself more of an agnostic than anything,I don't know if God exists or not. I do know it's better that I don't believe because once I do I'm going to look at this world and hate him with all my being.

Do I believe there is something 'bigger than us' in the Universe? Sure. No matter who you are, there is ALWAYS something bigger.

Do I believe there is 'a God'? No, and certainly not as proposed in the institutionalised religions of the world. Having said that, it is not my place to question or argue about someone else's faith.

Humans are very good at 'explaining' things in terms of their understanding. At one point, humans 'believed' that we lived inside a hollow vessel and the stars in the sky were far away camp fires. Humans at one point 'believed' that the world was flat and you'd fall of the edge if you sailed too far. I seem to recall Galileo was excommunicated for going against the 'belief' that the Earth was the centre of the Solar System (and, Yes, I realise that the Catholic church made amends for that - about 300 years later). In the absence of definitive 'proof', human beings will accept the fantastic as fact...

There might well be but in the absence of any evidence I'm not going to construct an imaginary deity-that is the key point. I'm not making a statement that God definitely doesn't exist I'm saying in the absence of evidence I choose to disbelieve that he exists and I think that is the logically correct thing to do. If he does exist I have nothing to fear because my disbelief is honest and founded on sound reason and common sense.

Yes. But when I think about God that is represented in religions around the world (specially in Christianity, because I was born as a Christian) that representation of God turns me off from believing in it. In Christianity are not reasonable explenations of God and this explenations doesn't fit to our time we are all living. My values are different from those that represents Christianity. So I have chosen to be out from institution of any kind of religion although I still believe in a God, but that God don't have demands from me. We live seperately and that is good for me, because I have work to do here in Earth and "he/she" has work to do somewhere else, in other dimension.

I will say yes, as in yes there is a small possibility that pixies exist, its just that that the overwhelming lack of evidence pointing to the non-existence of pixies prevents me from logically acknowledging them. To answer your question I simply cannot believe that there is a god who would create complex, critical thinking beings, then hide himself from them and expect them to worship him or be punished with eternal torment.

Could there be some sort of higher power that kickstarted the universe? Maybe. But I don't call it "God", and it's certainly not speaking through my thoughts. I'm not even positive that it's paying any attention to this universe at all, wherever it is.

In as much as I was not around to see how everything came into being (and neither were you),I say, "I don't know ..... YET!" To assume that some god, my less than intellectual ancestors made up, instantaneously farted the universe into being, is absurd

I notice you received quite a bit of hostility and condescension in many answers. Wonder why... Your question seemed perfectly legitimate.

It makes you wonder just why those folks hang out on a religion board if they're so hostile to the concept of religion....
