I would get something like Iam's or Eukaneuba large breed puppy food. I feed Diamond here, Diamond makes a large breed puppy.

Any of the brands of food you can get at regular grocery stores or Walmart/Target aren't considered the best. But if you are on a budget or have to buy it there, Purina would probably be the best. The problem with these is that they have whats called 'fillers' which just fill the dog up, instead of protein that the need. This makes them go to the bathroom very frequently and eat a two or three times more than they should. so you're just really wasting money. Usually the first thing on the ingredients list is 'Corn meal' which is a no-no.
Chicken Noodle Soup for the soul, Natural Balance, Science Diet, Nutro, Diamond and a few others at Petsmart/PetPros are great ones. They're good sources of protein instead. Protein is the key! They need plenty of it. I just switched my cat to Nutro and shes eating less food plus using the litter box a lot less. We saw an instant change the next day. Haven't switched my dog yet.
But your GSD is a high-level energy dog, who needs a lot of exercise. It's defintely worth it to spend the extra money in the better brands of food. The money you think you're saving getting the cheaper brands, is actually going to waste because your feeding them a lot more often and having to buy the food more often as well. Im glad I made the change here recently. Good luck with ur dog!!

Dogs are not humans and dog food has to be differrent from human food. If it was the same we would be having same teeth as that of a dog. The best way to feed a dog will be by giving a combination of proccessed food and human food. Say 90% and 10%. Since I live in a tropical country, I dont feed my Dog uncooked meat or Bones for the fear of tapeworms and other worms which thrive on this climatic conditions. So about 60% is Pedigree or other Proccessed food and 40% cooked meat, eggs, and carbs - cooked rice, so that my pet will be used to alternatives in an emergency. Also, I keep changing the brand of proccessed food every pack I buy. All the Best!!!

By gsd I suppose you mean german shepherd. Yes pedigree is ok, but make sure you are feeding the large breed puppy formula. As I am sure you know german shepherds are prone to hip problems and you can help him out by feeding him the right food. This will help him to reach his full body weight a little slower and give his joints a chance to catch up. If they grow to fast it is not good for their bones and joints- leading to hip/joint problems. I really think that Iams is a better brand though if you need to get a grocery store brand. It has more complete nutrition and is more digestable than pedigree foods. Good luck with your new puppy.

It is a adaquate food for a dog. It has meet the minimum standards and passed feeding tests.
I do not like it as it is full of corn and the dogs have to eat large quantities of it to maintain weight and they poop huge amounts and it is loose.
When I feed a higher quality dog food my dogs eat less the poop is firm and small and their coats look better they seem to hold body weight easier.
I actively work several ofmy dogs as they are hunters and if I am not feeding a high quality diet they tend to get thin durring the season.
I feed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.
No corn or whaet or soy and no by products. Meat fresh never frozen is the forst ingredient. That is a quality food.

Nope pedigree is not a quality pet food. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. It's okay, but it's definitely not the best. Lower-end foods tend to use a lot of corn and chicken byproducts. You want chicken to be the first ingredient on the bag if possible, because some dogs develop allergy to corn.
Also, your dog will be very large, and if he grows too quickly it will be hard on his joints. I recommend a food specially formulated for large breed puppies (lower protein %) so he will grow at the proper rate. I use Royal Canin large breed puppy, but there are better ones out there (they are more expensive, of course).

In a word......NO! Natural rearing, ie raw meats, bones, vegies and fruits (Blended in food processor as Dogs cannot digest the cellulose in vegetables) will give your pup the best possible start to life, but if you are going to feed a commercial dog food, then I agree with b.w. and choose one of the quality holistic dry foods. And generally as GetemGang said, puppy formulars will grow large breeds too quickly, so and adult food is better.

I've always fed my dog Pedigree and he is healthy and active.
It's all about personal choice.
Nutro is also a good choice and there is a brand called Canine Caviar that is wonderful.
