Essential oils are like any chemical compound some are harmless some can iritate the skin and some are toxic. Some require just a little to make you sick some require a heck of a lot. What is harmless to an adult can be toxic to the unborn child, these are usuaully termed mutanagens or tetranogens, can alter the way dna works and therefore alters and harms the development of the unborn. The point is though essential oils have active ingredients in them and with all active ingredients (eg pharmaceuticals) you have to follow the guidelines.

Some essential oils (not all) used to be used in the pharmacopoeia as abortifacients (abortion-inducers). Oils should be used very carefully during pregnancy as they can affect the way the body works - for instance, some that might ease period pains can also induce false contractions, possibly causing miscarriage.
Some neat oils are toxic or irritant. Tea tree oil, for example, can inflame sensitive skin when used neat and has a similar effect to turpentine if ingested.
Don't forget that just because they are 'alternative' therapies, doesn't make them 'safe' - they are still chemicals and should be treated with the same respect you would a OTC medication. Check with your GP and with a naturopath or herbalist before using any essential oils during pregnancy or on sensitive skin.
