I asked a little while ago about things I can do to help myself with this depression, and I'm just wondering what proffessional help is available to me. Unfortunately I cannot pay for any treatment, so either has to be NHS or charity.
At the moment, my doctor isn't very helpful (for a number of reasons I cannot change docs) and I feel I need more help than I'm getting. A 5 minute appointment once a fortnight isn't really enough, I am spiralling down and I need more help. I'm on the waiting list to have an assessment with a physcotherapist and they will arange conselling or cbt. Is there any other help I can have? I don't know how long I can carry on like this.

Oh, and I'm in the UK by the way :)
Any advice on how to tell my doctor that I can't cope would be much appreciated too.

Unfortunately medical or family doctors sometimes aren't much help, unless you can get them to prescribe you some medicine, which that is what helped me out. Can you look up in Yellow pages for someone to talk too?? There must be someone you know you can talk with until you get an appointment. I have been there too, you are not alone, and it can hurt..I pray for you.

if you are unfortunate enough to be covered by socialized medicine, please call an American friend and tell them how bad it really is and then make a file and present this to your physician yourself and basically challenge them yourself with printouts etc. Depression and anxiety can be treated by many of the same drugs but the one that come to mind is Paroxentine tablets. This drug is an SSRI anti-depressant which is highly effective, generic which means that the drug is readily available worldwide. It is also used to treat panic attack and rather successful i might add. The brand was made by Glaxo Smith Kline but I think pretty much everyone has licensed the patent. Just google the name paxil to find studies on the drug or email you and I'll pull some abstracts off of medline concerning use in your particular diagnosis.

I have anxiety and depression, I've found out lately.
And my doctor does nothing. My counselor does nothing but tell me to get out and meet people, which isn't helping if I'm really uneasy about going out among people and my being depressed turns people off from saying anything to me. I'm supposed to be getting medicine and maybe it'll help, but who knows.

As for treatment, especially free or low-cost treatment, I haven't heard of any. You might want to look it up on the Internet or even ask your doctor if there are any groups or such that aren't very expensive. I had heard there was a support group online that's supposedly free, but I haven't found it yet.

Many members of the clergy (pastors, ministers, etc.) are trained in mental health counseling. You might try calling around to some churches in your area. Our pastor does this kind of work for free, and is buddies with the best psychiatrist in town. I hope you can find a similar situation.

Is he prescribing you any meds. You didnt say if he was. From what you said he should give you some meds. Xanax is good for anxiety- it calms you down and keeps you calm. For the depression he should give you prozac or zoloft.

If its is talking that you feel would help, there are many discussion boards that you can participate in. I found they have helped me in the past.

Try some St. Johns Wort(a herb). It's supposed to have a effect on depression. personally i would only use this till I could get to a doctor to get more effective meds if needed.
