I used to have a big big problem with flying. Would be just sick for days before & until the plane landed! I so know what you mean.

I used to get an Rx from my doctor just to help me relax and calm a bit.

Eventually I did overcome the fear. Here are some things I still do and now ... I can actually fall asleep before the plane even leaves the ground.

I try to sit where I can see the flight attendants. By watching them carry on with their business as usual - I know they are not scared & they do this all the time - so they should know.

I also do not put my feet on the floor. Sounds silly but it helps. By putting my feet either on my carry on bag or on the bar of the chair in front of me, I do not feel the vibrations of the plane & that helps as well.

When the captain announces that turbulance is a possiblity - that helps a LOT - I wish they would all announce that. Just to know that they are aware of it helps to prepare me when it does go less than smooth. Just knowing they know & are prepared & are preparing us too.

A magazine, a crossword puzzle, a good seat companion - anything to take your mind off the flight are good too. I try to take a magazine with good short articles to read.

Often though, I find I don't need the distractions - because I do fall asleep now. Easily.

Good luck & I hope your fears lessen because they are very real & very hard to understand to anyone that never has been scared of flying.

Have a great time on your holiday!

I suggest this service: http://phonedetectives.co - The best reverse cell phone lookup service.

It's a cheap service that works great! It could be used for a much deeper search. You can use it to get hold of different varieties of background reports, and in addition cell numbers, addresses and names.. you can get unlimited reports... I ran with this because I required to verify more numbers.

You can get the name, other phone number, address history, relatives, and much more about anyone! The completly free reverse phone lookup generally doesn't provide anything interesting. To get interesting information, money will must be paid. The free searches don't provide considerably more than what may be found through the phone directory or personal information and they simply require your email to send spam. The reverse phone detective search tool does work, but you should use just the service that I posted above. The last thing you want to do, is pay for a service and find the numbers you want to lookup are not available in their directory.

The service that I reccomend doesn't have any kind of problem , you won't get any bad surprise! Trust it!

Reverse Phone Lookup area gives you additional access to millions of public records, including:

+ Find out the source of a harassing ("prank") caller
+ Research a number that appeared on your phone bill
+ Locate an old friend from high school or college
+ Research "missed calls" on your caller ID that you don't recognize
+ Verify an address
+ And more...

PhoneDetectives - http://phonedetectives.co

Conduct an instant reverse phone lookup. 100% Confidentail and Instant Results!

You really have nothing to worry about, flying really IS the safest way to travel, yes its always big news when a plane has a problem but how often is this? There are tens of thousands of flights worldwide every day and 99.99999999999999999% of them go without a hitch. Its a proven fact that you are 100,000 times more likely to die in a road crash on the way to the airport than dying as a result of a plane crash. I used to be rigid with fear on planes, the way i beat it was getting on planes, simple as that really. I now fly around 40,000 miles every year and have been doing for about 9 years now. You mentioned Kenya :) was there less than a month ago, from Heathrow on BA its about 7 3/4 hours. This will sound daft but if you are nervous about crashing and want to go to Kenya, fly with BA, they run the Boeing 777 on that route - as the planes havent been in service that long they have a 100% safety record, always comforting to know if you're nervous.

Interesting Question. My tip is to look at where you are going on holiday and how long the flight is. This is a good way to estimate how long your in the air for. To combat the fear off flying simply visit a local airport and watch aircraft taking off and landing. Then think about taking internal flights around the UK i.e) London to Manchester. or other short flights. They help with the check in procedure, Getting to the gate on time, Boarding the Plane, Finding your seat, Safety demonstrations (which for a first time flyer can be information overload and quite scary), then the take off and landing procedures which again can be very scary. Hopefully the above will help out loads.

Don't fly from Glsagow because the international departure lounge is a dump and checking in your luggage 2 hours early in a building outside in the rain after you've spent and hour and a half in the queue is a bit annoying at 4:30am an a December morning. Also, a basic understanding of physics is helpful as it is virtually impossible for a plane to "fall out of the sky". Maybe if tour operators focused on telling people this and providing a little information on educating people about how flight actually works or basic advice like, even is an engine fails or cuts out then you're still safe 99% of the time etc then less people would be scared, but then again, that would cost you guys money wouldn't it? And we can't have that.
Also, people doing covert market research tends to put me off anything at all.

As the BR of the 80's and 90's kept telling us. Let the train take the strain. Make it part of the holiday experience.

I believe being prepared and organised really helps. If you have extra worries it just adds to your fear. So here's my advice and some things that I usually do or think about.

- Pack everything you will actually need for the flight in a bag that will fit under your chair. Then you wont have to keep getting up and its at easy reach if you need something.
-Put your passport and tickets etc... in a seperate place (e.g. zip pocket in bag) so easy to get to but still safe.
- Leave in plenty of time so you havent got the extra worry of being late and rushing. You need to be organised and relaxed, not rushing and panicking.

- When checking in ask for a seat towards the front of the plane. If there's turbulance you wont feel it as much as you would at the middle or rear of the plane. Also you will be closer to the toilet so not so far to walk (wobble!) and nearer the exit you wont feel so "closed in" and you will be first off the plane.

- In the departure lounge wonder round the shops, go for something to eat..... your holiday has already started. Dont just sit waiting it will only make you think and worry.
Set a reminder on your phone every 30minutes to check the screens for any changes/delays for your flight. Otherwise you wont relax and will constantly check the screens, OR you will forget and miss your flight.
You usually start boarding 30-45 mins before take off so you don't really need to worry about the gate number until 1 hour before take off. (Unless you are at a big airport when it takes 20minutes to actually get to the gate!!!).

- When waiting to board the plane at the gate don't rush to get on the plane. Go to the back of the que or even sit and wait (but sit near the gate) then you wont be sat on the plane for quite so long.
- Don't worry about what you may have forgotten, you can probably get it there anyway!

- Remember that you wont actually take off or land until the hostesses have been asked to sit down. Many people get "worked up" just waiting to take off or land.
- Take something to occupy you, a book, magazine, music, or watch the film..... anything to take your mind off it. Take travel sickness pills, even if you dont usually suffer, it will calm your tummy! Make sure you eat and drink water on the flight, feeling hungry, dehydrated will just make you worse.
- Focus on what the hostesses are doing, the drinks coming round, food, duty free. Before you know it you'll be there!

Hope this helps!
Good luck x
