The Quran says; "There is no compulsion in religion." But it also makes it clear that once you feel internally compelled to accept a religion, then what is the point of not observing its practices.
The pig is one of the few animals who carries the tape-worm. It has also been scientifically proven that if you leave beef in a sterile environment it will age, but pork will not age - from within the very flesh emerge worms that eat on the flesh - like maggots. Based on that alone, maybe avoiding pork is best. so hey - I'll steer clear, and I can quite understand why God would ask me to, wether its a sausage, bacon or otherwise.

Yes you would have to give it all up,in fact as I understand it you have to avoid anything that comes from pigs even medicine,so be careful what blood thinners you use as an old man because several are derived from pigs. Or you could just continue to eat pork inall it very tasty varieties without other Muslim friends knowing. There are after all several mail order companies that deliver fresh frozen meats, mmmm pork chops.

Yes. Pork, the meat from pig and everything obtained from the body of pig, is absolutely forbidden in Islam. This is mentioned in many verses in Koran (The holy book of Islam) and also in the Sayings of prophet Muhammad. There are no specific reasons whatsoever attached to this commandment of God.
When someone has faith in God and hence believes in the holy scriptures, then he has to submit his will to the orders of God without any conditions attached to them. After all, God wants us to submitt ourselves wholly to HIM. Also, pork is not the only source of protein on earth, one can certainly live without it.
Submission is not about what we like or what we don't like but it's about living up to the standards set by God Himself for our lives. When a practicing Muslim stops taking pork (drinking is also not allowed in Islam), he will be submitting his likes n dislikes to the will of God. This way God wants us to control, train and tame our conscience, so we could easily live up to the other values of Islamic way of life.
It's of course very satisfying to be a practicing person and a practicing Muslim. The life has a beauty of its own.
