Actually many of the smaller automobile engines use a timing belt rather than a chain. For example Toyota and Honda have them and recommend they be changed about about 60,000 to 70,000 miles.

A metal chain that is properly designed and lubricated should last much longer. Metal can take extended high temperatures better and doesn't break down the way the elastimers in belts do.

Well I wasn't to sure what a "timing" chain is however:

Metal is:

Normally light weight
Strong - not brittle
Malluble - able to bend into many shapes and sizes
Long life span
Cheaper for factories to buy in bulk
Easy to use to mass produce


Disadvantages however:

Once broken hard to fix certain parts - whole unit needs to be replaced
Rust - Some metals will rust
Metal can tend to be expensive

Advantages: , Stronger so less lightly to break or stretch, last much longer, Less chance of slipping timing

Disadvantages: Noisy, needs lubrication, costs more than belt type

In order for your vehicle to keep running smoothly the timing must be **** on, if it were a rubber belt it would slip and you would be forever going to the garage to have it adjusted.
Timing chains do jump, but this is very rare.

well now they use rubber so they go out faster than the old chain type, but when they first came out they where two gears and they never wore out so they didn't make as much money. Now you fix it yourself or a shop does and they make more money

i geuss the same reason bike chains are made of metal. It is what will last the longest.
