Yes it's genetics. Partly. My father died from colon/rectal cancer and my mother just went through a battle with lung cancer. I smoke too.
The best thing you can do is to stop worrying for one thing. Don't borrow tomorrows trouble. You can do things now to help yourself later on in life but don't stress it.
Do try and stop smoking. I keep trying.. but no such luck yet. Eat plenty of anti-oxydents (Can't spell) like blueberries. They can help you fight off cancer. Take care of your body, even if you can't quit smoking. Excersize, eat right and get your annual checkups.
You said your mother has bowel cancer but you didn't say how old she is. You should get a colonscopy 10 years sooner then she was diagnosed. So if she's 45, you need to start at 35.
Some cancer's are genetic but that doesn't mean you're predestined to get them. It means if the conditions are right, you will probably get them. Like if you smoke 4 packs a day and you have the gene to develope lung cancer and you don't eat right then you're at an extremely high risk to get it.
Not all cancers are the same, they have different causes and different treatments. The only thing that the majority have in common is how to prevent them. Be active, eat a well balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit. don't smoke or drink, learn to manage stress, and keep those you love close to your heart.
Best of luck

-One of the causes for getting cancer is HEREDITARY. If your both parents had the disease there are every chances of your getting it also, but you need not get alarmed or afraid of it. Generally Cancer strikes without any advance intimation all the patients become the victims.

In your case expecting the worst thing to happen you can always have cancer detection tests done at regular intervals. Now a days there are vaccines for some cancers and it can be taken. also treatment in the initial stage will be definitely cure the disease.

Smoking is another cause for getting Lung cancer. There is no question of cutting it down. You have to leave it just throwing all the stock you have just now and stop smoking. Only will power is required to stop this.

So be in consultation with an Oncologist and you will have no problem. We can not take any chance at any time as CANCER IS STILL AN ENIGMA. Best of luck for a cancer-free life.

It is unknown whether the increased risks are truly familial (i.e. some vague way "hereditary") or are due to a common environment that family members share. However, familial agressions of cancer have long attracted attention.

An example of this would be High blood pressure or heart disease. Some family have a tradition of eating pork and other foods high in cholesterol; this goes down throughout the years and BAM, everyone has a problem with cholesterol levels.

There is probably some of each factor, heredity and environment, at work, but in general the increased familial risk for "cancer families" is not large. Nevertheless, because cancer is easily controlled in the early stages, If you believe you may be more suseptable "catching cancer," you should have random screenings as advised by your doctor.

Hope this answers your question!

Some cancers are genetic. There are cancer genes that cause colon cancer and breast cancer and some others. Another part of developing cancer is your lifestyle choices. It's good that you are cutting down on smoking, but really you need to quit. Smoke is the leading cause of lung cancer and lung cancer is the #1 cause of cancer deaths in men and women.

The potential to get cancer can be passed down genectically. What you can control is any potential through your environment- which means, eat well, exercise daily, and quit smoking. They just released a study where they have proven it is not helpful to your body to cut down on smoking- one has to quit altogether. You should just quit today- right now. It's the best thing you could ever do for yourself. Peace and good luck.

I am 29 years old and have ovarian cancer, with every intent and hope to go into compete remission very soon.I have been told that there is a heriditary link between certain types of cancers, but, nobody in my family ever had ANY type of cancer as far back as we can trace, so this just goes to show that anyone can get it, regardless of your family's genes. Good luck to you and your family, and God bless!!

If someone in your family has cancer it does increase your risk, but not as much as smoking.
