Stick grenades have an advantage they throw farther than pine apple grenades. This has good points and bad points the stick grenade can be tossed a long way to the enemy which is good in the offensive mode. It's bad in defense mode as the fuse takes longer to detonate the grenade. The extra time needed to toss the grenade all that distance to a target is useless up close as the target now has time to pick up the grenade and toss it back. This is why our grenades are short fused for up close work they are defensive used to clear rooms not bombard trenches and machine gun positions from a safe distance. It should be noted that the Russians used stick grenades for awhile after WW2.

As Jesi and Diadem have stated the design was easier to throw and it would stay on the target. During Cold weather most soldiers had either gloves or mittens and with the handle it was easier and safer to hold and throw without removing the gloves/mittens.

It was one version of many to emerge as the most effective for thrown distance, stopping on impact (little or no rolling around off target), and as well as easier to manage safely.
Other versions came, but none were as popular among the German infantry as the "potato masher".

The "handle" made it easier to throw in cold weather as well as giving the thrower more distance.
