I am looking for a place to go for my winter vacation. I am currently teaching in Korea. I will go by myself, so I am hoping for somewhere that is easy to meet other people doing the same thing as me.

I agree with Spanky that Cha-Am and Hua Hin are very relaxing, but with a less bawdy nightlife than Pattaya, and you can "get away" from Pattaya a very short distance away in Jomtien, which is quite relaxing and much, much more quiet than Pattaya and still have the option of experiencing Pattaya's nightlife as well.
Also, my favorite is Koh Samui, where you can get whatever you want, quiet or exciting. Phuket can also offer many options, depending on your mood, they're all beautiful places, and can offer you whatever you're looking for. Have a fun time relaxing!

Well, Pattaya has all the nightlife you can use for a whole lifetime, but for me, it is not that relaxing or pleasant - - unless, maybe you go a bit south to Jomtien Beach..

But, my first choice would be Cha'am and Hua Hin area, which has a much nicer environment and much less night life, but still has something going on... after all, how many bars do you need in one night?

Of course, the big names like Phuket and Krabi have it all too, but you said you are a teacher and I am going to figure that expense is also a concern for you..

I am also guessing beach but there are some interesting palces in the north that are cooled out...

Broad subject here.. feel free to contact me if you need details

Unless beach is a must for you, Chaing Mai is highly recommended. It is a beautiful city, much quieter than Pattaya or other beach resort towns. Lots of historic places to visit and mountains/parks to relax. And yet you can have very good nightlife with less hustle & bustle like Pattay or Phuket. There are lots of small and cosy boutique hotels where you can really relax.
(But during the Int'l Flower Festival till end of Jan 2007, Chaing Mai is packed up with tourists and hotels are expensive.)

Go to Koh Pagn Nagn. Make sure you go to Had Rin during the full moon as the party there is so amazing and then you can relax on the beautiful beach in the day. If the party atmosphere is too much then just pop up the coast as all the beaches are just lovely!

Phuket on Patong Beach. Phuket is much more relaxing than Pattaya (Pattaya is dirty, noisey, crowded - Phuket is Beautiful!). Patong Beach in Phuket has all the nightlife (girl bars, go-gos, discos, etc.) with better day-time scene hands-down than Pattaya. Stay in a hotel in Patong Beach, Phuket and walk to the countless bars etc. located on Bangla Road (this is the central nightlife spot in Phuket). A quick google search on this area will show you what to expect. Have fun!

Go to Kata Beach on Phuket. It's lovely, relaxing but still quite a good "nightlife" as well and if you look for more excitement crazy Patong is not far-a-way.

Pattaya has the best nightlife, but stay in Jomtien to relax. Jomtien is south Pattaya.
