You can try Windows Live OneCare safety scanner for free anytime. It is available at

I use it about once or twice a month or more if I feel the need. If your pc has lots of programs. It will take a few hours. Mine took about 80 minutes. It also cleans and tunes up your pc. It also creates a restore point in your pc.Try the complete scan. It really helps. It doesn't give false positives. If your pc is free of viruses and spywares it says so.
