Malachi writes about 100 years after the exiles had returned to Jerusalem from Babylon (c. 450 BC). There is a 450 year prophetic silence, and then a direct connection to the first prophet of the New Testament period, John the Baptist. Luke quotes Malachi 4:6, that the baby John will come in the “spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

The biggest difference between Jesus and any other person ever, is that Jesus is our Lord and savior. There is and never has been a prophet or other person in the old or new testiments, or present day that has ever died for the sins of mankind. Jesus died so that we can have a chance at repentance and salvation. Jesus is the bridge that carries us to God. Without his sacrifice and his the price that he paid with his blood, we would not be able to communicate with God or ever have the opportunity to one day see his dwell with in his Holy presence.
