The Mona Lisa is not solely famous for the painterly skills of Leonardo Da Vinci. It is the high water mark of the Renaissance. What is important about the painting is not he skill of the painter but the Metaphor which the painting contains. Metaphor is the sine qua non of art. The central thema of the painting is "Man In Nature." Notice that the model is dressed modestly. Her clothes are not flashy and she is depicted out of doors. This was a radical departure from paintings of the past. Many paintings were done to show a persons status, this one does not. Also many works of art were commissioned by the church to show her stature in society and to use aesthetics as an instrument of supremacy. In the Mona Lisa Da Vinci shows a simple woman without need of the trappings of grandeur, possessions, religion. It is for this reason that the painting is called Humanistic. This is a very important piece of art, and is considered priceless. As far as technical merit goes, the painting hides several "maquettes," underneath, has hundreds of subtle layers supporting the visage, and took 5 years to complete.

I have seen this painting and have to say it was most disappointing. I passed many paintings far superior to this to get to see it. Don't know what all the fuss is about.
