Well I suppose the lid falling off at some point during the funeral would be awful.............and could scare the living s**t out of the mourners!! xxx

No, coffins are not "nailed" down, and haven't been for number of years since we now have metal hinges and latches for caskets. And NO, bodies DO NOT sit up because of gases escaping!! That is an urban myth!

It wouldn't be very comforting for the deceased's family if the lid of the coffin fell off during burial now would it ??

Also, corpses have been known to sit up due to the last of the gases leaving their bodies.

Well, two reasons.
One you can work out yourself, and the other makes sure that if they weren't dead when you started hammering, they will be by the end of the procedure.
