The ultra strict puritans were the first white folk in the Americas and they eventually cut of ties with their old churches. Also America was the first opportunity to go some where else than the old world.

Not sure that's true. Only the academically disadvantaged around the world tend to believe in "literal truth" in so-called holy books. these are the luddites who still believe that the world is flat and you'll fall off if you go too far. It seems that as far as they're concerned, truth is only that for which there is no evidence. They've thrown out all science in favour of so-called miracles. The implication is that order does not rule the universe. Only random whims of the great Fuehrer in the sky.

Actually, even Americans don't believe the literal truth of the Bible... only of selected parts that they like to use to "puff up" the way that they think things should be.
Otherwise, every American Christian would have a sword firmly in hand!
[Luke 22:36] "Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one."

It's religion brainwashing here in the U.S. Organized religion has been at it longer in Europe and many people have become skeptical of it there. It's still relatively new here in the U.S. so they still can try to brainwash but people are getting wise.
