pain is relative. and it depends on where you are getting it done. the spine hurts a lot, because all of your nerves originate from there. the foot hurts a lot too, i don't know why but it does. but everything that is worth something hurts. i don't know what you mean by "what sort should i get" but i think you should get something that you like or something that has meaning to you. don't walk into a shop and get whatever flash on the wall catches your eye. i promise you will regret that. go to an artist that can custom design a tattoo just for you. you'll be happy you did. good luck!

Tattoos really only hurt depending upon where you're getting them, and how high of a pain tolerance you have. The ones that are closer to muscle tissue or bone are probably the worst. And if you really want to get a tattoo i think you should figure it out yourself, because if you just pick one it's just how JImmy Buffet says, "its a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling" So if you get one, make sure it has a meaning, or at least a reason that is true to you and why you're getting it.

A tattoo is a needle pushing ink into several layers of your skin.
Yes, it may be painful.
But if you really want the tattoo, you can deal with it.
And if you're going to let some stranger on the internet tell you what kind you should get, then you shouldn't be getting one at all.

id say the smaller it is, the more painful it is going to be. if it takes longer, your natural endorphines (or whatever the hell they are) kick in. the one on my back started to feel like he was scratching an itch. the smaller ones i have, and solid black were a bit more painful. i dont agree with the "over the bone" rule, it hurt more on the sides than anything (on my lower back). the pain is tolerable. it isnt going to hurt where you'll feel like you cant take it anymore. its really liek an annoyance if anything. you will do fine. just make sure your blood sugar is up/you've eaten something before hand. dont let people scare you! its a beautiful thing! just watch out, because they ARE addictive!!! obviosly, if u get it an a sensative area, is going to be a little more painful, but like i have said, it isnt the type of pain that you will have to have them stop or anything like that. good luck and have fun!!!
ps: it feels like someone is scratching you too hard, atleast thats what it feels like to me, liek being cut. i think the center of your back may be the best, or maybe your arm. my man here says his back hurt more than his arm. my lower back hurt more than the rest of mine. but its worth the pain!

personally after going thru 4 ear piercings(3 on the lobes and 1 on the cartilage) i would choose to have a tattoo anytime..but anyway it depends on where you're getting it..i have one on my right upper forearm and it didn't really hurt..i guess tat's a gud place to hav one anyway cuz u can cover it anytime u want. d first prick might hurt a little but after awhile the area gets numb and all u'll feel is sum sort of 'scratchy thingling'. hmm..mayb u design 1 on your own? it would mean more to you and you won't get tired of it i guess
