My Golden gets along with everyone (super friendly). Everytime I take him to Petco or Petsmart he makes sure he has to sniff every dog's butt in there to greet them. Why does he do this?

Have you also noticed, that dogs large enough to reach a human's crotch wil also do same to greet a human? I have Leonbergers and much to the consternation of most visitors, especially men, hehe, they often are treated to a nose up their butts. Certainly, it must be way for them to gather information. Perhaps every dog's scent is unique?

Finally an answer to the question..
Once upon a time all dogs were invited to
a party. When they arrived at the party
they were required to leave their
butts at the door. All the dogs hung them
on hooks by the door as was good manners..

The party went on and the dogs were
having a great time. All of a sudden
somebody barked FIRE!! . The dogs raced to
the door and grabbed whichever butt
they could grab first.
In an effort to find their own butt.
that is why, to this very day,
dogs sniff each other's butts!!!!

scent checking....anal gland sacs to the left and right of a dogs anus has oils that should be secreted with each poop. That scent is a dog's "signature". Sniffing those is a non-aggressive way for a dog to get to know the other dog plus figure out if they have "met" before.
and if there happens to be a lady in season, that info is gathered as well...

Because dogs have a very advanced sense of smell, they can "read" in the butt smell whether the dog has any disease, if it's a male, female, it he/she eats well... etc

I think its because they want to smell where the other dog has been in terms of diet, you can tell alot about what a dog eats from the smell of their feces.

That is how they get to know eachother. It's like they have information stored in their butt glands......think of their a$ses like a personal profile.
