I don't drink - strange I know - I haven't done for years - I have the odd shandy thats about it - however my fella does drink - which is normal of course!! I wonder though if his drinking intake is over the top and if he maybe needs to cut down. with not been a drinker myself I feel I am probably not the right person to judge as just 1 bottle of wine in one evening appears excessive to me!

so this weekend - and this is generally the norm - sometimes he drinks more wine than I am about to outline!!

please bear in mind he never has any tea if he is drinking, so what he does drink has more of an effect and he normally starts at 5 ish in the afternoon!!

Thursday - he drank 9 pints of lager and 1 bottle of red wine
Friday - he drank 10 pints of lager, 1 pint of cider and 1 bottle of red wine
Saturday - he drank 10 pints of lager and 2 bottles of red wine
Sunday - he drank 7 pints of lager and 1 bottle of red wine

Totals
5 bottles of red
37 pints
over 4 days

to judipod - thank you for your answer - I would just like to say honestly that he is not depressed or lonely - he really isn't - there is no deep rooted cause as to why he drnks so much - he just can!! he says its normal and everyone he knows does it - hmmmm!! not so sure about that!! he is fine at work - does a cracking job, never lets them down!! but your right - he is bored of TV etc - and its NO fun at all for me watching him get plastered 4 nights a week!!

I would say that that IS a lot to drink over the course of one weekend, but my husband wants to know does he play pool, as the amount that he drinks is the standard qualification to play for his team !!!

Yeah... that's a lot. Not as much as I used to drink, but certainly a very unhealthy amount. As a long term alcoholic I can say from experience he is drinking twice the amount he really should be. The UK goverment guidelines come up to around 12 pints a week for a man, but personally I can't see the harm in say 4 pints a day as long as the person is in otherwise good health and does not often exceed this.
Once I had (about) 32 pints, 3 bottles of wine, 12 bottles of alcopops and 6 double rums over a day and almost died of alcohol poisoning - and it was over 2 years later when I realised I had a drink problem! Really he should cut down before he reaches this level.

Yes it is a lot. Its more worrying because he is not eating and is basically drinking on his own.

It doesn't sound like he is drinking because he enjoys it - eg opening a bottle of wine to go with a meal or having a couple of pints after work with his pals. It sounds more like he is getting as much as possible down his neck, possibly to escape from bad feelings like loneliness and depression.

He is obviously aware of the problem as he is restricting his drinking to weekends, but he cant be doing too well at work on Fridays and Mondays and sooner or later that will be noticed.

On top of that, if he is drinking beer in the pub and wine at home that little lot will be setting you back nearly £6,000 a year as a couple, not including crisps, taxis, or the generous rounds he might buy for his mates once the drink gets hold. That's money on which you have already paid tax.

Finally, you are entitled to enjoy your partners company and have fun together at weekends, but all that is happening is that you sit and watch him drink.

I would suggest you try and get to the bottom of what makes him drink. He could be bored - there's not much on the telly these days - or miserable at work. Try and get him to go with you to places where he can't drink, such as footie matches or the cinema. If he's going to the pub straight from work see if he will accept a packed 'tea' that he can scoff before the drinking session.

You have to tackle this before it gets worse.

Hi...To me, and speaking only for myself, your guys intake of alcohol does seem a bit excessive...but a big night of drinking for me is three drinks total.

And that leads to my point...it all depends on perception. Here's a few questions for you to think about as only you and he can answer them...When does he drink? Why does he drink? Does he drink to get drunk? Has his drinking affected his work performance. Does he call in sick regularly because of drinking?

One final point to ponder...I don't know how old your guy is but, based upon what I've read online and my own experience, the body's ability to properly process alcohol does change over time. My Dad was an out-of-control alcoholic and, toward the end of his life, he only needed one or two drinks a day to stay drunk as his liver function was so compromised...it could only process SMALL amounts of alcohol. As a friend of mine says...you can do just about anything to your body until you're 40...after that you really should"straighten up and fly right!".

Hope this helps and best of luck. He has himself a good partner who is concerned.

Peace JF

Thats a lot 28 units of alcohol spread over a week is the recomended allowence for a adult male. that works out to roughly 2 pints of 3.5% larger a day. and you cant save them up and drink it all in one go at the week end. So id say he needs to cut down thogh this will be hard

Sounds like an amateur to me. You can't really be considered a total boozehound if you only drink lager and wine. I drink 10 pints of lager before breakfast. Tell your man he's fine.

Yep. Its a bit excessive. If he drinks during the week as well then its way too much. I will bet his cholesterol is low and his arteries are clean. The beer alone would be borderline ok but in addition to the wine it just seems too much. If he is not drunk and it does not affect his social behavior, family life or job and he can afford it then no worries.

that seems a hell of a lot and well beyond recommended levels. Can you try asking him to either cut right down or to give his liver a rest, say on the friday after drinking on a thurs and sunday after drinking sat? (by not drinking on those days i mean) it will prob mean a total change in his habits if he is just going to the pub straight after work getting bladdered then coming home and drinking more

I have observed the phenomenal drinking habits of some of the Brits (if you are not British, I apologise). So on an overall scale, I would say your boyfriend's consumption levels are way over the top, on the British scale - I don't know.
