This depends on what religion it is that you choose to practice. In many Jewish synagogues water is dripped over burning sulfer to create a steam which supposedly causes a trance for the purification of children as not to pass a childs sins down to their fathers in time of death and weakness (before the age of twelve a child is not responsible for the sins which he commits, but his parents are responsible. since it is impossible for a parent to know each sin their child commits this purification process takes place to clean the soul. i doubt the wailing you hear is screaming but more the cries of children as they adjust to the heat induced by the steam)
