Catholics worship Mary as a divine 'mother of God'.
Protestants don't. They believe she was just a human vessel that gave to the world the Son of God.
A smaller detail is this - the Catholics believe Mary Magdeline was a prostitute - no other Christian Church does.

Catholics believe that they have the Priesthood passed down from Peter. Therefore, they have the same "religion" that Christ established.
Protestants are exactly what their name says. They protested something (each protesting something different) about the Catholic church (or another Christian faith) and started their own church. Baptists in particular broke away after Catholics began the practice of "sprinkling" for baptism. They believe that one should be submerged in order for baptism to take place, just as Christ was when John the Baptist baptized him.
There is only one Christian faith that is non-Protestant other than Catholicism. That is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The reason this faith is non-Protestant is because the founders did not break off from any other faith. This faith also believes to have the same Priesthood that was held by Peter, James and John and all the other Diciples as well as Christ himself. The difference is that LDS believe that the Priesthood was restored to the earth after God took it away because there was no one on earth worthy to have this blessing. A common fact between LDS and Baptists is that we both believe in complete submersion for baptism.
I am LDS, and I took a wonderful class at BYU called "Religions of the World" where we studied faiths from all parts of the world, both Christian and non-Christian. That is a very simplified explination of what I learned in that class about Catholicism and the Protestant faiths.

Besides the idea of Jesus' mother, Mary, being sacred, the Catholics believe in praying to various "saints" for intercession with the Father, while Protestants believe we pray directly to Jesus or God. Also, Catholics believe that they must confess their sins to a priest, who issues "punishment" in the form of penitence to absolve the sinner, while Protestants believe in taking their sins directly to God, for His forgiveness. Protestants do believe in confessing sins to their spiritual elders in many sects, not for forgiveness or punishment, but as a means of repentance, and in order to obtain spiritual advice/feedback.
These are the differences that I have become aware of over the years, having many friends on both sides of the ecclesiastical border.

The first Christian religion was Catholicism. Hundreds of years ago people protested against the harsh treatment by the Catholic Church and they were known as the Protesters. They then started there own religions based on Jesus Christ and it became known as Protestant. The only difference is in the ceremonies

Catholics place a lot of emphases on the Virgin Mary and Protestants don't. Catholics think you should confess to a Priest and Protestants don't. You confess to God alone and no man. Catholics have many rituals they must go through that are non existent in the Protestant belief.

the difference is doctrine. They also have a couple books in their bible the Protestants don't..like Maccabees and the Apocrypha. Its the tenets of their articles of faith that differ...They believe the Pope is Gods rep on earth...they believe in purgatory after death...they believe in celibacy for clergy...etc.
