They're both genuine. The British English is genuinely British, and the American English is genuinely American.

At one time, America had only American Indians living there, so I assume the language in America was then the American Indian language (whatever that is called) but then other people (many British) came to America to be free (from whatever). So, I'm sure the British brought British English to America with them. So, from that perspective, you might be tempted to assume that British English is the genuine one, but the original one might be more accurate; at least as it compares to American English. In other words, I assume it started out as British English, but got changed to the point where it was quite different, and consequently became known as American English.

All languages develop and change with time. Neither British English nor American English are like the English that was spoken a few hundred years ago. Both have developed. American English came from British English, but since then both of them have developed and neither one is the same as the "original" English was.

So there isn't really any "genuine" English, there are just different dialects.

On the basis that British English was being spoken by the people who went over on the Mayflower to the New Land, then it's fairly safe to say that British English was spoken well before American English....

They both share common roots in original English. Neither are spoken as they were centuries ago so neither are genuine in a sense but both are English. British English is closer to the original accent-wise though.

The word "genuine" is a bit tricky. I take it that you meant "original". British english ("queen's english") is original.
As it is, Americans are proud to say that they don't speak English, they speak American.
