i'm trying to do some research, and i thought I would ask a few people on here why immigration has become such a hot debate only recently? what issues does immigration affect - social security? taxes? i just would like some educated answers on why immigration is an issue at all; what caused it to come up? the main reasons (legal, what not).

Immigration has been a hot topic for ten years. Recently it has been brought to a rapid boil. The reason we are about to finally tackle the issue has to deal with social costs associated with immigration. For example, FAIR has document the cost to states financing one illegal immigratnt woman having one baby and raising that child to adulthood. The cost of a normal childbirth is now $6000. If the woman qualifies for WIC then the state pays the grocery stores about $1500 per year. ($3000 for two years). If the child qualifies for Healthy Families the state pays $2000 per year. ($36,000 for 18 years). When the child is old enough to attend Headstart the state covers the $3500 annual cost. Entering kindergartener costs $7000. Each academic year afterwards the state pays $7000($91,000) If the child has difficulty speaking English the federal government pays about $2500 per year for three ($7500) or four years ($10,000) while the child improves proficiency. While the child attends school the cost of free lunch is $3 per day or about $525 per year. If the child qualifies for free breakfast as well, the feds contribute another $250 per year leading to a total annual cost of $775. (13 years $10,075)
If later in his educational career the child has difficulty the feds will provide afterschool tutoring costing about $2000 per year for 4 years.
In California the elementary class size is 20. It costs about $175,000 to build that classroom.
Assuming a classroom lasts 40 years the annual amortized cost would be $4375 and each child's amortized annual cost would be $219. (5 years equals $1095).
Let's add up all these costs- $169,670.
In this calculation classroom allocation costs for grades 5-12 are not included.
Also not included are any special education costs, bus transportation, special needs or welfare. These costs are typical, although Headstart often is not included. The other costs are quite typical. Let's round off the costs at $170,000.
Perhaps now you understand the immigration controversy. Who pays for that one extra child?
What occurs if the child becomes involved in the criminal justice system. Who pays for that?
The pro-illegal immigrant crowd advocate that the taxpayers be assessed. The average tax cost to the payers is $9444 per year. If payers pay an average of $1000 in state tax then the child has to have nine families supporting him.
If California has one million illegal children in California schools then it will take nine million families to support them. The pro-illegal immigrant crowd say that illegals pay taxes. True. they pay some property tax (about $800 per year per family which covers other social services) and about $1500 in state sales tax (implies that the family bought $19,000 in taxable merchandise...highly unlikely). Sales tax probably would be about half of that, or $750. Thus, illegal families pay about $2250 in state taxes annually. They pay no state or federal income tax due to their low earnings
For the sake of argument, let's assume that all that money were used for the other social costs, then, in that case, each illegal parent's child will require nine state payers contributing $1000 each for the child. That is our dilemma.

Immigration is not an issue - ILLEGAL immigration is. The only 'issue' that has come up, and the only reason any bills have been drawn up in Congress, are to address the control of our border (keeping illegals out) and to determine what to do with the estimated 12million illegals already here. The options are deportation (that is, making them pay for their crime against America) or forgiving them and letting them become citizens (that is, approving of queue jumping and illegal acts).

If a Mexican girl crosses the border and makes it to the United states and her unborn child is born in the U.S after she crosses the border even if she is caught she gets to remain in the U.S. and is eligible for Welfare to support that child. It costs the Government more and more money taking care of sick illegals with no easy solution in process.
Now as for the economic value, the dollar circulation from the Federal Reserve has to be monitored and that means if the U.S is dispensing more money in the U.S. that is non taxed becasued illegals pay no taxes the dollar value will drop and we burn more money at the end of the fiscal year becasue that money is no good.
We have to maintain a balance and working American help keep that in balance that pay taxes...it's the non paying tax illegals that casue ithis balance to get off track which includes drug money circulating on the economy that is non taxed and it creates havoc. for the Federal Reserve.
Ohms Law in Electronics is when resistance goes down impedence goes up and in our economy if the dollar goes down what goes up???
The price of gold goes down what goes up????
We have to maintain a balance on the commodities and this is why the dollar goes down the prices go up causing a STRAIN on the economy.
If Americans decide they want to save their money and stop using credit cards what happens???
The Federal Reserve will then lower the interest rates and encourage Americans to spend that money becasue if it sits too long in the bank drawing interest and the balance is off the dollar value drops and then the stock value drops lowering the interest and causing your money you saved in the bank to become worthless and then depression hits and now we have a serious problem in the private sector and all of this is a result of illegal immigrants in the U.S. costing tax payers ovver 40 Billion dollaars a year of lost money that cnnot be replaced by the Reserve and the value of the dollar drops and oif it drops too much the stock market willl crash and when that happens, the U.S. is now in a serious delima and the only cure is to borrow money and open trade markets larger and raise taxes again and it casues a depression.
Congress blames lack of trades, spedning , taxes and illegals for this problem.
That is why immigrants os the big issue.

Well, for me, I always knew there were illegal immigrants here, but never would have believed the government would let the numbers get to as large as they are. I assumed virtually all of the Spanish speaking kids in the school were born here of parents here legally, for example. (I live in LA.) Thinking it was just a few and that their impact was marginal on schools and services, I felt sorry for them, and didn't care if I paid a few bucks more in taxes, that much.
Then when the marches came and I saw the numbers I looked into it. I was amazed by the numbers (did you know that according to government numbers HALF of the Mexican nationals in this country are estimated to be here illegally?) However, in a state where our schools are failing our children, hospital emergency rooms are closing and Democrat Today describes the public schools as 'places where poor people send their children', I was incensed that my children's education had been allowed to denigrate to this point when the government knew so many were coming and was not taking any logical measures to stop it.
I was also baffled that I hadn't heard more of the impacts of illegal immigrants on the failing schools and health care. I read in a European paper discussing the same issue that papers were minimizing coverage 'so as not to stir up trouble'.
Telling us the truth so we can protect our children's future is 'stirring up trouble'?
Knowing well the impact of ESL programs on draining California schools of funds or interest in programs for our own children, when I learned that there were those who encouraged illegal immigration to get cheap labor at the expense of our children's upwards mobility, I was infuriated.
I have always voted for Diane Feinstein, but was amazed that she was voting to make temporary workers for 3 seasons in agriculture permenant residents so we would subsidize their families forever, and educate their children in return for the marginal savings agriculture would get from not having to pay a living wage. I expected better of her.
I for one feel betrayed. The impact was here, but I didn't know it wasn't a localized freak thing, living this close to the border. How people could possibly think this cumulative number of illegal immigrants could NOT inspire fury is beyond me. How they could be permitted to bring in family downline, as is currently thought of, is entirely in the wrong direction.
According to hearing testimony, Los Angeles alone pays about $1 BILLION dollars a year in benefits for illegals. If you have a child in the schools here, and are struggling to find affordable health insurance for them as well, you will be able to think of all sorts of places that money should have been spent on our own people, before accomodating illegals. There is a reason for the laws. They should be enforced.

Immigration is good for the state if the entrants are professionals or skilled workers who can fill employment vacancies in order for America to progress economically. It will mean more taxes and income for the government. However, if the entrants are not skilled and educated, they will add up to unemployment rate and crime rate will increase due to poverty.
