The Qur'an was sent down to Muhammad in words, from God (Allah s.w.t.), by the Archangel Gabriel.
It was memorized by all the believers, and it was kept safe from being forgotten, or diluted, by God.
After the death of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and after a deadly battle in which many of the memorizers of the Quran were killed, Abu Bakr order the Muslims to write down the Qur'an.
Only the people who memorized the exact Qur'an were gathered and wrote it into what were called 'Suhuf', which are the old kind of paper used at the time.
There were a couple of the followers of Muhammad who were given the honor of writing the Qur'an, but the only one that I can remember is "Abd-Allah bin Mas'ood".
Hope that answered it for you.
Peace.
Edit:
For all those who are saying that Muhammad wrote the Qur'an, please review you information.
Muhammad couldn't read, nor could he write.
PLEASE MAKE SURE OF YOUR INFORMATION BEFORE POSTING IT.
Peace.

Shoaib.... you don't know your deen, bro. Prophet Muhammad did not write the Quran!
As stated previously, the Quran was revealed to Muhammad by angel Gabriel. The Prophet related the verses to his Companions and those who could write then wrote them down. The Prophet then checked them. An important thing to note is that at the end of every islamic year the angel Gabriel would come to go over all previous verses with Muhammad in order to make sure the verses were accurate!

The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by the angel Gibrail. The Prophet (pbuh) would remember these revelations and spread it to the people who were close to Him at the time (family & friends). They would also remember the chapeters that were revealed but in fear of forgetting it they wrote it down on what ever they could find stones, tree's etc. Once they wrote them down the Prophet (pbuh) checked them.
Throughtout the Prophets life 114 chapters, one by one were revealed to him. The Prophet remembered all of these in His heart. The Muslims at that time would keep writing them on the stones, trees and what ever they could find and they were checked. Once all 114 chapters were revealed then each written down chapter was gathered together and put in order.
I conclude to say human wrote the Quran but the poet is Allah. They are the words of Allah and the Muslims at that time wrote them down so that others may learn and get guidance. So thats why we have Qurans today, their are printed with the specilised machinary but that doesnt mean the machine also wrote the book.

Quran is the words of Allah.
Allah ordered Gabriel to read the Quran to Prophet Muhammad, step by step, and case by case.
Quran was read to our great Prophet Muhammad by Gabriel in about 13 years, and in His turn, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to read it to His followers who did memories it all.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) never learned to read or write.
The Quran has never changes since.
Many people tried to write something similar to Quran and all failed to write even a Short verse equal to Quran
The words of Quran could not be matched by any human being so far and will never be, because it is the words of Allah.

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate Ever Merciful
If you can not believe that The Glorious Quran is the Word Of GOD...then I suggest you one thing.
In many places in The Glorious Quran...Allah says "Produce a Surah like."
It means: Try to write your own few verses like The Glorious Quran has.
Common on..give it a try...LOL...never will you be able to beat this challenge....many expert Arab poets gave it a try but where humbled...some even converted due to what they realised...They realsied that THIS IS WORD OF GOD WHICH NO HUMAN HAS OR WILL ABLE TO PRODUCE

Quran is the word of Allah.
It was revealed to Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) through the angel Gabriel.
Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) could not read or write.
He taught Allah's revealed words to his Companions and they were responsible for writing down the verses that Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) taught them.

Muhammad's followers memorized his words while he was alive...then after his death they started amassing all of his sayings into a book form from memory....much the same way the Christan bible was written...from mens memories, Jesus never wrote anything neither did his followers until 30 to 50 years or more after his death. Same here.
