I thought bolus means a pocket of food when you are chewing, and your tongue and pharynx push it down into the esophagus.

Bolus is the word when used in medical sense,it means giving a dose of a drug which is going to prime its target.The main aim of giving a bolus dose is providing quick action for subsequent dosage of the concerned drug.Usually it is given via intravenous route.For example if u give insulin as bolus dose,it helps facilitating action of next dose of insulin.
