Blinking is okay but closing your eyes longer just looks like you're not paying attention to what they're saying. If someones talking about something important, looking like you're falling asleep just is disrespectful. So that's probably their reasoning.

If you are purposefully doing it, it is rude. If you have a tic in your eye muscles, or have a physical problem with your brain, then it isn't rude. I'm not being sarcastic (for a change) a tenant of mind had a serious brain problem which caused his eyes to roll back and then close while he was talking. It was considered a disability because no one would hire him. So, if you are doing this to empathize what you are saying, or to physically do some body language because of what you have heard someone say, then I'd suggest you get over this very bad and annoying habit. Or, see a doctor, right away.

If someone's getting mad because you're blinking while talking to them then that's wierd. I don't think it's rude at all. If you're snoozing while I'm talking to you then that's not cool.
I personally have a hard time with eye contact. I personally make eye contact with someone during conversation to make a point or ensure understanding. Eye contact is so intimate that it shouldn't be for everyday. I'm not saying that I'm wandering off into space when someone's talking to me, I'm looking at their face, just not directly into their eyes. It just seems to intimate and invasive for me.

i do it in personal conversations, like when I am thinking back and I want to relive a situation in my head in order to recall it accurately.
I am not ill mentally or disinterested, it's something I have done while talking.
I think it's far More rude to roll your eyes, yawn and smack your lips. I have a Friend who does that if she doesn't want to hear what you have to say, it's obvious and very blatant.

making eye contact during conversation is essential. if you do not it could mean you are disinterested, depressed, lying, or have some other social problem. it also may mean you are unable to make contact with others through emotions, and could mean mental illness.
keep your eyes open.
