Ok, here's what you'll need:

Cold water.
Ice.
A table and chair or stool.
Study materials.
A timer.
Harsh, dissonant music.

Then.. actually do your darn work. Plenty of times, you get sidetracked. Avoid this by setting a constant pace for yourself: 50 minutes of work, and a 10 minute break. Use the timer. Besides, keeping your mind occupied will make it easier to stay awake.

Avoid caffeine, if possible. See warnings below for why. Drink 2 brimming glasses of ice cold water every 30 minutes. Not only will the cold keep you awake, but you'll need to pee very often. It's difficult to sleep that way.

Play (softly, if you have a roommate) a fast-paced, grating music. You may enjoy it, but it must be, at all costs, harsh and a bit unrythmic. This will keep you from being lulled to sleep.

Work with windows open: cold air will keep you awake. Warm air knocks you out.

If using a computer, set your computer screen to a lower setting, (duller and darker) so as not to strain your eyes. See warnings below for why.

Turn off Instant Messengers, the TV, and do not surf the internet or read, draw, etc. In fact, pinch yourself if you do. Pain is a good discontinuer.

Do not work in bed, on a couch, or on the floor. If it is any other place than a cold, hard table and chair, you will feel very tempted to sleep. If possible, work somewhere far away from your room/bed, so it's a pain to go back and sleep.

Eat high-protein foods on a regular basis through the night: smoothies, cheese, a sandwich, a plate of stew will all keep your energy levels as high as they are during the daytime. You have to eat an extra meal or two as you are burning extra energy.

If you're all by yourself, and have comedy tapes, put those on during your 10 minute break. Use the timer! Avoid movies, however, or things with a lot of plot. You could get sidetracked from getting back to work. Best if you can dance, or do pushups or situps, something physical that won't make a lot of noise.

Alternate between working on your essay and studying for your tests. One hour or so for each. Work through all of it. If you have time at the end, pack up your stuff, lay out your clothes, then set your alarm as late as possible, maybe you can catch a little sleep.

Before you leave for school, jump around, do push ups or situps, drink a little caffeine drink and get pumped up and awake.

WARNINGS:
Caffeine and Sugar: Both, while giving you a temporary high, will induce a "crash" which will only make you more tired. These are both to be avoided, as they'll screw up any chance of performing life-like in class tomorrow.

Eye-strain: This is caused by excessive tiredness, reading in bad light, or staring at computer screens for long times. Take a break at reading or working on the computer every 10 minutes, simply by turning your head and looking around the room for a few seconds, then get back to it.

Alcohol: Now that's just stupid. Alcohol not only reduces focus, but is also a depressant, meaning it makes you slower and tired. Bad idea.

Pulling more than 2 or 3 all nighters within a week can really take its toll on anyone, even if you are a light sleeper. Avoid pulling too many all nighters, and only use it as a last resort.

Now.......... get outta here and go DO it! And good luck! ;)

The cold shower suggestion was a good one. Also, try brief fits or exercise, like running around outside for two minutes. Also, do not spend any more time on Yahoo Answers!!! Just do your best on the essay and try to get some sleep before the test. Even if it's just twnety minutes, it will probably help you.

I tend to fall asleep when I am warm and cozy, so try to make your environment a little uncomfortable (not really uncomfortable), I also like to down a couple of coffees, but I guess you can't do that. If you are in a panic, your adrenaline will keep you going. And stop surfing the net! Focus on your assignments! Good luck.

In my day we did it through better chemistry but I would suggest or support that today. When my son had to pull an all nighter in HS ... I stayed awake with him...answered his questions and drilled him on the subjects. If you can get some morale support from a family or friend it might help you stay awake.

Good luck.

focus on the task
no particular remedy works unless u've got the willpower, on several occassions i've tried coffee, weed, loud music, cold shower and fell hopelessly asleep,
but when the **** really hits the fan i cant sleep even when i want to.
on the other hand just think of how peaceful ur sleep will be after you hand in the essay and take the tests

enjoy!
