I like New Orleans a lot and am very happy here pre and post Katrina. I've lived here the better part of a decade and really enjoy the city's character. Some things I've always noticed about the city, good (adds character) and bad (frusterating ticks of the city), of which many have become more evident since the storm, are as follows: 1) On any given street, the streetlights, stoplights, and buisness signs operate properly about 75%of the time. 2) There doesn't seem any rules of the road, but people still drive better and are more courteous here than in Chicago. 3) Less "choices". If the rest of the country has 10 kinds of Snapple in their grocery stores, we only have 6. It's like that for many, many things: choice of grocery items, choice of restaurants, stores, etc. There's not as much variety. 4) The Christmas display with the moving, motorized elves at the Lakeside mall looks like it dates back to the '60's. 5) One must always be prepared to stand in line wherever one goes for indefinate amounts of time. 6) It's ok to ride in the back of a pickup truck with three of your friends and their five children all under the age of ten. 7) Everything looks slightly run down, but in a good way (ie. Magazine Street).
And I'm sure I could go on. Post Katrina, there are parts of the city that still are not functional. But the areas that are, seem to be doing well if not operating fairly normally. Come visit! It's a really great city.

I was born in New Orleans and I still live there now (I'm 14)
I can't imagine living anywhere else, I did for around 5 months in Dallas and it's amazing how different it was. I feel blessed to live in such a wonderful city, and even after Katrina I feel like I'm apart of something great, the post-K generation. Life for me hasn't changed dramatically because I live in the heart of uptown. I can go around 10 blocks away and see houses that got anywhere from two feet of water to six. Then theres suburbs like Lakeview that wern't even that lucky...
Overall I'm happy, but ever since Katrina theres been this feeling I can't name. For example Jazz Fest was great but there just seemed like there was something missing. Theres basically a lingering state of depression here and no one knows what to do about it.
I'd say you really ought to come down here for a vacation, the french quarter is basically normal and you can hang out there and downtown. And if you're thinking you don't want to come because those are the only places, you're wrong. It would be such a spiritual and life changing trip to come and visit places like the 9th ward, lakeview, chalmette, and see the destruction. Trust me, you cannot watch the news and see what's going on and have a clue, the only way to know about it is to see it with your own eyes.

Kudos to you for wanting to come down and help the economy out. I just got back 3 weeks ago. It's fine. The ranting about crime, etc, is so overexaggerated. If you are visitng the French Quarter, you wouldn't know anything happened. There is a little construction on Canal Street, and some fire damage left on a few buildings. Overall, the city is back, and in full force. Monday - Wednesday is pretty slow, and some shops are closed. Not as much music either. But Thursday to Sunday....ROCKING. Lots of music, shops open, street performers, crowds. Just like always. You will love it. The food - The Gumbo Shop and Johnny's Poor Boys. The music - Jimmy Thibodeaux, Grampa and Stoney B. You will have a great time...trust me. I wish I could go back right now.

New Orleans is a great city.. Before and after the hurricane.
I live 30min north of NOLA.. and go every weekend for entertainment. As for Katrina.. it only effected the locals .. tourists will most likely not see any damage done by Katrina unless you specially go out looking for it.. There is much to do here... The culture is great.. the food is great.. the music.. the festivals.. the french quarter is great... everything is open .. so dont be discouraged. and also Mardi Gras is coming up you know ;-) feel free to message me if you're looking for any info on NOLA.. So if ya ever come down .. i hope you have a great trip .. and dont forget..

I grew up in New Orleans, went to school out-of-state, lived in France for a year, then Houston, back to New Orleans, and am now currently living in Tampa. I can't wait to get back to New Orleans one day. It's one of the smallest big cities, so it doesn't take a long time to get around. There is tons of good food and music and people are so friendly. I feel like there I can strike up a conversation with anybody, whereas in other places a girl would automatically think you were hitting on her and a guy would get territorial.
Definitely friendlier and more easy-going than a lot of places.

I dont live there I live in MS, but I always use to go there. But from my point of view it is beautiful. The hotels, casinos. its just beautiful with all the lights at night, and i think the people are very nice. It seems like a movie. The streets are busy, to a limit. You can just walk around its lovely. Shopping is the BEST !!!!
