My uncle was a POW serving in a Japanese Mining labor camp outside of either Nagasaki or Hiroshima.

He told us that the days had kinda 'blended into one another after awhile". The day it happened the guards all left their posts and even the prisoners finally were able to get 'topside".

He probably did not get up there very fast, and he doesn't know when it was was or how long it had been afterwards.

But he said the mushroom cloud was very visible from across the bay... He really did not have any compassion for the Japanese at the time.... I don't know how he feels about it now.

The Japanese suffered 80,000 estimated dead from the blast itself.... interestingly enough however is the fire-bombing campaigns the US and UK undertook against the Germans in 1943. In Hamburg, it was so bad that it caused a fire tornado that had 150 mph winds in the center. It also caused temperatures that reached 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dresden was hit in a very controversial bombing campaign after it had been declared a "Free City" (meaning all military forces had been withdrawn). The USA refused to participate inteh Air Raid deciding that the city had no strategic value and was off limits due to the "Laws of War". It was the German main hospital when "Bomber Harris" struck it in 1945. The Germans protested VERY loudly when "Bomber Harris's" statue was unveiled in London.

i have met a few when i was in japan. they are still kinda bitter towards us. but the younger generation is willing to make friends. every year on the aniversery the mayor of hiro writes letters to presidents of countries with nuclear weapons. begging them to get rid of them. i have been at ground zero and the gov't building with the dome is still there. there is also a muesem. the the paper crane memorial for the children that died. but the city has recovered and if you go there you would have no idea that it was ever bombed. we used to party there everyweekend
