How do you explain the fact that whenever someone asks the question; "Describe your God.." every answer is different (some slightly, some widely)?

Am I missing something, or does this prove that people pretty much make up their own God?

I have no problem with this (Buddhists think all religions (ideally) are a form of mind training for each individual), but I’m just curious how the theists reconcile this fact.

Well, I can only answer from the Christian perspective.

As far as differences in the descriptions of God by Christians, I would say there are several factors:

1) How much Bible knowledge the Christian has.
2) How said knowledge is interpretted.
3) Cultural and geographic differences.
4) The spiritual maturity level of the Christian involved.
5) The dedication level of the Christian to the faith.
6) The extent of the understanding of salvation, and whether true conviction of sin is present.

There are probably others, but that's what comes to mind right now.

Be blessed.

We all have different experiences, childhoods and cultures that surely affect how we interpret religious texts and the world around us, both of which are strong factors in determining who God is. Everyone is different, so everyone has a slightly different belief and, therefore, a slightly different object of faith. I don't think it's a case of people making up their own Gods, per se, but people putting their own spin on the same idea. Most people are too smart (I hope) to blindly believe what other people tell them when it comes to faith and worship. It's natural for us to imagine an all-powerful being based on our own lives.

This is due to the fact that religions are creations of men. God never created or endorsed any religion.

Most view their relationship with God as a personal experience that transcends whatever their pastor or particular version of the bible says.

I am a polytheist so this is an easy question. There are multiple deities for us to describe.
