Let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors. Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths, and encourage the arts and commerce.
John F. Kennedy
Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing, only a signal shown, and a distant voice in the darkness; So on the ocean of life, we pass and speak one another, only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Love (understood as the desire of good for another) is in fact so unnatural a phenomenon that it can scarcely repeat itself, the soul being unable to become virgin again and not having energy enough to cast itself out again into the ocean of another's soul.
James Joyce
I feel as though I have lived many lives, experienced the heights and depths of each and like the waves of the ocean, never known rest. Throughout the years, I have looked always for the unusual, for the wonderful, for the mysteries at the heart of life.
Leni Riefenstahl
For as this appalling ocean surrounds the verdant land, so in the soul of man there lies one insular Tahiti, full of peace and joy, but encompassed by all the horrors of the half known life. God keep thee! Push not off from that isle, thou canst never return!
Herman Melville
A citizen of America will cross the ocean to fight for democracy, but won't cross the street to vote in a national election.
Bill Vaughan
Ocean is more ancient than the mountains, and freighted with the memories and the dreams of Time.
H. P. Lovecraft
Can ye fathom the ocean, dark and deep, where the mighty waves and the grandeur sweep?
Fanny Crosby

Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
Andre Gide quotes (French writer, humanist and moralist, 1947 nobel prize for literature, 1869-1951)
“In one drop of water are found all the secrets of all the oceans”
Kahlil Gibran quotes (Lebanese born American philosophical Essayist, Novelist and Poet. 1883-1931)
“We know that when we protect our oceans we're protecting our future.”
Bill Clinton quotes (American 42nd US President (1993-2001),
“No nation ever had two better friends than we have. You know who they are? The Atlantic and Pacific oceans.”
Will Rogers quotes (American entertainer, famous for his pithy and homespun humour, 1879-1935)
Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering.
Saint Augustine
To me the sea is a continual miracle;
The fishes that swim--the rocks--the motion of the
waves--the ships, with men in them,
What stranger miracles are there?
-- Walt Whitman excerpt from "Miracles" 1856
[It is] immoral to damage needlessly a remote and largely unknown
assemblage of organisms -- even if they are out-of-sight, out-of-mind,
and apparently of little importance to the general ecological processes
in the ocean -- through negligent and ignorant abuse of the oceans.
-- Martin Angel in "Ocean Trench Conservation" 1982
The last fallen mahogany would lie perceptibly on the landscape, and the last black rhino
would be obvious in its loneliness, but a marine species may disappear beneath the waves
unobserved and the sea would seem to roll on the same as always.
-- G. Carleton Ray in "Biodiversity", National Academy Press, 1988
We estimate that large predatory fish biomass today is only about 10% of pre-industrial levels.
We conclude that declines of large predators in coastal regions have extended throughout the
global ocean, with potentially serious consequences for ecosystems.
-- Ransom Myers and Boris Worm in "Nature" 2003
It seemed unbelievable, but I never found a clear spot. In the week it took to cross the subtropical high, no matter what time of day I looked, plastic debris was floating everywhere: bottles, bottle caps, wrappers, fragments. Months later, after I discussed what I had seen with the oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer, perhaps the world's leading expert on flotsam, he began referring to the area as the "eastern garbage patch." But "patch" doesn't begin to convey the reality. Ebbesmeyer has estimated that the area, nearly covered with floating plastic debris, is roughly the size of Texas.
-- Charles Moore in "Natural History" 2003
