Canberra is the capital city of Australia and with a population of just over 325,000, is Australia's largest inland city. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory, 300 kilometres (190 mi) southwest of Sydney, and 650 kilometres (400 mi) north-east of Melbourne. The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, the two largest cities, and out of fear of a seaborne invasion.

Canberra is the capital of Australia and is located in the end of the Australian Capital Territory, southwest of Sydney and northeast of Melbourn. The population is just over 325 000 presently and was selected for a capital in 1908.
The word "Camberra" is said to be derived from the name of the local Nebr people and in their Gunwale language that mean "meeting place".
Hope that is of help.
Have a great day!

Canberra.
And to set the record straight -
to Brice ............. The struggle between Sydney and Melbourne to be the capital was a hundred years ago so I don't think it's relevant to mention it anymore. (not being nasty - just my opinion)
to sharkgirl......... it may not be as lively as the bigger cities but there are other people living here than just politicians. It has its own character and it is not boring. Great place for families to grow up in. Plenty of family oriented places to go and things to do.
to sunflower........it is NOT "located in the end of the Australian Capital Territory" it is actually at the top end of the territory. It is from the NGUNNAWAL language (the local indigeneous people) meaning "meeting place"
My sources? I live in the Canberra region for nearly 30 years.

Canberra.
There used to be a struggle between Sydney and Melbourne. It's been decided to put the capital between the two cities.
