Bluetooth is an electromagnetic wave, similar to a cell phone, radio, etc. IR is actually light with a longer wavelength than red, so we can't see it.
IR pros: longer range
cons: needs an unobstructed path, travels in a straight line
BT pros: can pass through walls, fabric, etc, omnidirectional
cons: lower range,
