I'm going to a fancy dress party in a couple of weeks and the theme is 1976. I'm working on the outfit but am now wondering what to do with my hair. I've got straight dark brown hair that goes to about an inch or two below my shoulders. I'm not very good at hairstyling (usually just tie it back for work) but am willing to give it a go if anyone has any good (easy!) ideas...
Thanks!

Beehives were 60's. In the early 70's they did have some very elaborate updos. It depends on the rest of your outfit. You could try for the Janis Joplin look - hair clean, parted in the middle and just left to hang. Or you could curl it. They did have the "romantic" stage too, so you could put it up in a "pumpkin" style if you're wearing something floaty.
It depends on your outfit.

The secret in the seventies hairstyles was back-combing and loads of "firm hold" hair spray. Try taking tufts of hair and gently brush it backwards towards the roots to create a puffed up effect. Do this all over then brush the top very gently to flatten into the shape you want. Secure into a French pleat with pins at the back then SPRAY generously. It will feel as it is like cardboard but should last all evening. You can prick in one or two artificial flowers if you want.
Don't try to disentangle afterwards. Wash under shower head to get rid of the hairspray, condition, and your hair will be back to normal.
Have a lovely time at the party!

Either Kate Jackson's long pageboy hair (parted slightly to one side, worn straight with ends curled under) or Jaclyn Smith's freeflowing waves and feathered bangs (fringe), best acheived by large hot rollers and back-brushing, with lots of hairspray.
Another idea is to call your local beauty school and have a student research 1976 hair and then do a style on you. It won't cost much, and you'll be giving a needing student a chance to earn lots of good grades!

Ok.....this is how it used to work. Wash and dry your hair straight....then you will need some curling tongs.
Have a side parting on your hair and curl the ends at the back under. The side fringe and sides have to be curled outwards. Then loads of hairspray to make it hold. That is a genuine 70's hairdo....look for pictures of the New Seekers on the net about that time and you will see the style I am on about. Enjoy

You're a bit limited, but you could do big curls. Think Jaclyn Smith from Charlie's Angels. Blow dry your hair first, then use whichever curling product you have(large rollers or a large barreled curling iron) curl 2 inch sections at a time, and use a flexi hold hairspray to keep curls. Don't forget to fling your hair around some to get that 70's volume ; p Good Luck!
